2008 VIRGINIA CLASSIC MEN’S FAST PITCH SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT
The Peninsula Merchants host the annual Virginia Classic men’s fast pitch softball tournament on June 7-8 in Hampton, Virginia. Five teams will battle for the tournament title to be determined on June 8 in the 12:45 pm championship game.
Area teams GP Gwaltney of Suffolk and the host Merchants will take on the Chapel Hill (NC) Warriors, Big Cove from Cherokee, NC and Keatings Fitness Center from Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Chapel Hill has already faced the Merchants this season and split a doubleheader on the opening weekend defeating the Merchants 24-5 and falling 13-4 in the nightcap. They are also the Amateur Softball Association 2007 Men's Modified Pitch National Champions. Keatings participates in the Mid-Atlantic Travel League with the Merchants and has had long-time success regionally and nationally. Big Cove has participated in AAU National Championship Tournaments the last two seasons while GP Gwaltney always brings a competitive team from Suffolk..
Games will begin on Saturday at 9 am at Lindsay Middle School and at 10 am at Francis Asbury School. Sunday’s schedule will all take place at Francis Asbury School starting at 9 am with the first single elimination playoff game beginning at 11 am
