Wyevale Tournament Wrap Up

June 29, 2009

Wyevale, ON

Elmvale, ON

Port Elgin rattled off 3 Sunday victories to claim top honours at the 2009 Wyevale Tribe Tournament.  In the final the Devils defeated the Kitchner Outlaws who had yet another good result in 2009.  The Port Elgin offence was in full flight throughout the weekend averaging just under 7 runs per game.  Aaron Whitney hit two 3-Run Homeruns on Sunday to lead the vaunted attack.  He along with Mike Reiley were named Co-MVP's for the championship game as Reiley also belted a 3 run shot.  On the mound Smith, Fawcett, Hamilton, & Christie all shared time, and with Smith picking up 2 wins on Sunday (one in relief).

In the gardens it was Minesing who burned the midnight oil on Friday night....errr I mean Sat AM, as it was just a couple hours before sunrise when things closed down.  Saturday afternoon and into the evening it was the Cobourg Force (featuring Sammy 'The Legend' Forbes) who stole the show, as Sammy always does.  Cocktail anybody?  Saturday night saw the Outlaws from Kitchener enjoy the the jam session by Tribe 2nd basemen Kyle Lapham, and his partner Bill Neilly.  Again the sun was just rising as things were shutting down.  On Sunday we were able to get everybody home before midnight, except maybe Port Elgin catcher Matt Turcotte who enjoyed his 'me time' after a long day behind the plate.

The Sunday rain played havoc with just one game, but it that game started and stopped several times.  Players and umpires remained patient in the midst of the many waves of heavy rain.  So we are very appreciative of all those involved for their cooperation.  In the end we needed to shorten the semi-finals to 5 innings, and started the final just an hour later than originally planned (which was great considering we were well over 2 hours behind at one point).

Special thanks to Doug Cundall who assembled the blue crew for the weekend.  Games moved well and we never had 1 game shortened due to a time limit.  So credit is due to both players and umps for that.  This year we had the Tjart's working the BBQ up in Wyevale, which was a welcome addition to this tournament by both players and fans, so we are appreciative of their efforts as well.

I believe this was our best tournament to date.  This is inclusive of both the on field competition and the off field activities.  We look forward to hosting many returnees next year, and hopefully some new teams looking for good fastball, and great times right in the heart of Georgian Bay.

Best of luck to all the rest of the season.
