USAdefeats Canada to earn direct berth to Canada Cup Championship Game
 
(Surrey,BC) – The Canadian Senior Women’s National Softball Team squared off with theUnited States for the third time of the tournament, as the two top teamscompeted for a direct berth to today’s Championship game. In a very close game,the United States were able to earn a 3-0 win, as Monica Abbott threw 6 2/3scoreless innings, allowing only one Canadian hit.
 
Withan excellent pitching matchup between Abbott and Canadian pitcher Danielle Lawrie (Langley,BC), the Softball City crowd was in for a treat. After three scoreless innings,the United Stated opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, when JennieFinch led off with a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Brittany Rogers, whomoved to second on a sacrifice bunt and later scored on a wild pitch. USA addedtwo more runs in the top of the sixth, when Ashley Charters tripled with tworunners on base.
 
OnlyJennifer Yee (NorthDelta, BC) was able to produce a hit for Canada, breaking up Abbott’s no-hitterwith a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh.
 
DanielleLawrie allowed only three runs on five hits and two walks for Canada, strikingout four batters.

Inother Canada Cup playoff action, Venezuela defeated the Netherlands (7-0), TeamT.F.S. International (4-2) and Australia (4-3) to earn a shot at Canada in thisafternoon’s final. Earlier in the day, the California Activities eliminated theCalifornia Goldrush with a 6-3 win, but were then eliminated after a 1-0 lossto Australia.
 
Asa result, Canada will take on Venezuela this afternoon (1:30pm PDT), as thewinner will move on to face the United States in the grand final Championshipgame at 6:30pm PDT.
