I want to apologize for not getting the information to you sooner in regards to the Port Huron Qualifier. As you mentioned, this is our first experience with fastpitch. The tournament was won by the Alvinston Indians as they defeated the Ohsweken Redmen in the finals. This has been a modified tournament for the past 13 years and switching to fast pitch has been a lot of work, but it certainly has paid off. We have several commitments for next year already. The other 3 teams that played in the tournament are regular modified teams that have never played fast pitch before so it was good to see 2 of the 3 local products hold their own. In the final game, there was a little bit of controversy as there were 2 calls that played a key part in the final game. Also, legendary pitcher Darren Zack "tweaked" his knee and had to come out of the final game in the 5th inning. In the elimination games, the Indians received a great pitching performance from Brad Young and he led the Indians to a hard fought 1-0 victory over the Alexander Stallions. Dewey Dyck kept the Stallions close, but they were unable to muster a run against Young and the Indians.
In the other semi-final, the Port Huron Lanes Hurricanes took a 2-1 lead on a mammoth 2 run homer by Luke Smith. Smith was only playing in his 5th modified game and fourth at the fast pitch level. But in the bottom half of the 5th, Geoff Bomberry connected on his own 2 run shot to put the Redmen back on top 3-2. Ryan Enright led off the top of the 7th with a blast to tie the score at 3 for the hometown Hurricanes, but in the bottom of the 7th, Thomas Hill singled home the winning run and put the 2 Canadian powerhouses into the Finals.
