2015 Pan American Games – Men’s Softball Day 4 Summary

Venezuela 5 vs. Mexico 1

Venezuela opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Yeider Chirinos led off with a single and later scored on a single by Luiger Pinto. Mexico got that run right back on a homerun to right-center field by Marco Gonzalez in the top of the second to tie the game at 1. The Venezuelans regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to left by Tulio Linares. In the bottom of the fifth, Venezuela loaded the bases with no outs and an illegal pitch pushed a run in to score which brought on a pitching change, and after a ground out, Jorge Lima hit a sacrifice fly to center to score the runner from third as Venezuela took a 4-1 lead. John Zambrano hit a solo homerun to right the following inning and Mexico was unable to get anything going over the last two innings. Erick Urbaneja pitched the complete game win for Venezuela, allowing only one run on three hits and struck out nine batters.

Argentina 3 vs. United States 1

The Americans got on the board quickly as Chris Miljavac led off the game with a single and later scored on a triple to the right field corner by Matt Palazzo. Argentina scored its first run of the game in the bottom half of the third when Juan Zara was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball and ended up scoring from second on another passed ball that the catcher was unable to find in time. Bruno Motroni, who had intentionally walked, got to third on the second passed ball and scored on an infield single by Gustavo Godoy as Argentina took a 2-1 lead. Each team threatened over the next two innings but the score remained unchanged until Fernando Petric led off the bottom of the sixth with a homerun to add an important insurance run for Argentina. The United got a pair of singles in the top half of the seventh but Juan Potolicchio got a big strikeout to end the game.

Canada 7 vs. Dominican Republic 2

In the final game of the day, Canada took the early lead as Ryan Wolfe led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third when the catcher’s throw went into centerfield and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Hill. Hill went on to add a solo homerun to right in the bottom of the fourth, but the Dominican Republic responded by drawing two walks before Engel Santana hit a two-run triple to right field to tie the game. Canada took the lead by taking advantage of two costly two-out errors in the bottom of the sixth, with Ian Fehrman and Ryan Boland adding run-scoring singles and a bases loaded walk by Mathieu Roy to complete the scoring. Andy Skelton was perfect through the first four innings but was pulled after allowing the two-run triple, and Paul Koert struck out six batters over the last two innings and a third to seal the win.
