2015 Pan American Games – Men’s Softball Day 5 Summary

Argentina 7 vs. Dominican Republic 0

Argentina got on the board first in the top of the second when Bruno Motroni singled and later scored when Fernando Petric hit a ground ball that the second baseman couldn’t handle for an error. The following inning, Argentina got two runners on base and scored on a passed ball and Motroni singled to left to bring another run home followed by a two-run homerun to left by Gustavo Godoy as the Argentineans took a 5-0 lead. Godoy drove in another run with a single to right in the fifth, and Huemul Mata hit an RBI single to left in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring. Sebastian Gervasutti picked up the win in the pitcher’s circle allowing only one hit in five innings and striking out second, with Juan Potolicchio throwing two perfect innings of relief with four more strikeouts.

Canada 4 vs. Venezuela 1

In a battle for first place, Team Canada opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Mathieu Roy led off with a single, advanced to third on a single by Jeff Ellsworth and scored on a third single by Steve Mullaley. In the third, Roy was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple to the left field corner by Ellsworth as Canada took a 2-0 lead. The red and white doubled that lead to 4-0 in the fifth when Mullaley hit a run-scoring triple off the top of the centerfield fence, and he immediately scored on a single over the second baseman by Andy Skelton. Luiger Pinto hit a solo homerun in the top of the sixth, but that was all Venezuela would get as Paul Koert, Skelton and Derek Mayson combined for a two-hitter.

United States 2 vs. Mexico 1

In a final preliminary round game with important playoff implications, the Americans started the game with a one-out walk and single but the next batter hit into a double play. Mexico also got a walk and a single in the bottom of the inning but could not open the scoring. After feeling each other out over the first four innings, the United States got a leadoff walk by Nick Mullins followed by a two-run homerun to right-center field Pat Sagdal as the United States took a 2-0 lead. Looking to respond immediately, Jorge Rios was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fifth, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a single by Erick Ochoa to cut the lead to 2-1. Another single put runners on the corners as Team USA made a pitching change to bring in Tony Mancha, who induced a pop out as the Americans got out of the inning. Mexico got a leadoff single in the sixth with the runner being sacrificed to second, but that was as close as Mexico would get to tie the game as Mancha struck out the next two batters and sat Mexico down in order in the seventh.
