2015 Pan American Games – Men’s Softball Day 6 Summary

Venezuela 1 vs. United States 0

Despite having rained in Ajax for most of the morning and early afternoon, the game between Venezuela and the United States started as scheduled and featured a fantastic pitching matchup between Venezuela’s Ramon Jones and the United States’ Tony Mancha. After each team got one runner on base in the first, Venezuela scored the only run of the game on a leadoff homerun to centerfield by Jorge Lima in the bottom of the second inning. The United States got a runner on second with two outs in the top of the fourth on a double to left by Josh Johnson, but the next batter grounded out. The Americans later got a pair of baserunners on a walk and a single with two outs in the sixth, but another ground ball kept them off the scoreboard. The United States got one final opportunity to tie the game when Chase Turner led off the seventh with a double followed by a walk, but Jones got a strikeout and a pair of ground outs to leave the tying run at third and the winning run on second. Jones allowed only three hits and struck out seven, while Mancha allowed five hits and also struck out seven.

Canada 2 vs. Argentina 0

Sean Cleary fired a one-hitter for Canada, retiring the minimum of 21 batters as both of Argentina’s baserunners were retired on the base paths. Canada opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Derek Mayson singled, advanced to third on a single by Ryan Boland and scored on a single up the middle by Brandon Horn. The following inning, Jeff Ellsworth drew a two-out walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a single by Jason Hill before scoring on a single to right by Derek Mayson. Argentina got a leadoff single to left by Juan Malarczuk in the top of the fourth but he was thrown out at second after trying to stretch his hit into a double. In the seventh, Cleary issued a leadoff walk to Juan Zara but he was later thrown out at second when attempting to advance on a ball in the dirt, and Cleary struck out the last batter to end the game. Canada stranded nine runners on the bases, but the Argentinean bats couldn’t get anything going against Cleary who also retired seven batters on strikes.
