2015 Pan American Games – Men’s Softball Day 7 Summary

Venezuela 2 vs. Argentina 0

With a spot in the Gold medal game on the line, Venezuela turned to Ramon Jones while Argentina countered with Roman Godoy in the pitcher’s circle. Venezuela put a runner on base with a one-out walk in the top of the first and the runner moved up to second on a passed ball, but was left on second. Argentina countered with the game’s first hit by Juan Malarczuk to lead off the bottom of the inning, but he was immediately retired on a double play. Venezuela managed a leadoff single by Edwin Linares in the third but Godoy bounced back with three strikeouts. The following inning, Venezuela got a two-out single by Jorge Lima who scored on a double by Rafael Flores, and an error allowed Flores to score as well. Meanwhile, after allowing a single to the first batter of the game, Jones retired the next 18 batters he faced before Juan Zara and Bruno Motroni both singled in the bottom of the seventh, but were both left stranded to end the game. Jones struck out seven batters allowing only three hits, while Godoy fired 12 strikeouts in the loss.

Canada 2 vs. Venezuela 1

In the Gold medal game, Canada caught an early break in the first as Venezuela got a runner to third and the runner stopped half way down the line on a passed ball that he thought had hit the batter, but Ryan Boland tagged him out. Venezuela got one runner on base in each of the second third innings but were unable to score, and Canada was stymied by Erick Urbaneja through the first three innings. Canada got two walks in the fourth but wasn’t able to produce a run. In the bottom of the fifth, Derek Mayson got Canada’s first hit of the game on a great bunt but was retired on a double play and Kevin Schellenberg followed with a single to center, but was caught stealing soon after. Canada went on to break the tie in the bottom of the sixth as Mathieu Roy led off with a walk and scored a two-run homerun to right-center field by Brad Ezekiel to give Canada a 2-0 lead. Venezuela was able to cut the lead in half when Flores hit a one-out single and later scored on a single by Linares, but Sean Cleary struck out the next batter to end the game and secure the Gold medal.
