2015 Pan American Games - Women’s Softball Day 1 Summary

 

Cuba 3 vs. Dominican Republic 1

 

To start off the women’s competition, Anisley Lopez of Cuba and Geovanny Nunez of the Dominican Republic started in the circle. Both teams left runners stranded in the first inning, leaving the game scoreless heading into the second inning.  Cuba was scoreless in the second, while Feliz of the Dominican Republic hit a double and then scored on an overthrow at first by pitcher Lopez, leaving the score 1-0 for the Dominican Republic heading into the second inning.   Neither team got much going offensively in the third or fourth innings, leaving the score close at the start of the fifth.  The game turned in Cuba’s favour in the top of the fifth with an RBI triple to centre field by Yarianna Lopez, and an RBI double by Diamela Puentes, leaving the score 2-1 in Cuba’s favour heading into the bottom of the fifth.  The Dominican Republic stranded one runner on base in the bottom of the fifth.  In the top of the sixth, Cuba’s Maritza Toledo hit a home run over the fence making the score 3-1.  The bottom of the sixth proved unsuccessful for the Dominican Republic.  In the top of the seventh inning, Cuba was able to advance runners to second and third but weren’t able to score.  To end the game, the Dominican Republic got one runner on first but was unable to score any runs, leaving the final score Cuba 3 vs. Dominican Republic 1.  Lopez got the win, allowing three hits and striking out eight, while Nunez allowed five hits and struck out five. 

 

Canada 6 vs. Brazil 0

 

Brazil started off the game with no luck in scoring runs, leaving one runner on base in the top of the first inning.  Canada made quick work of scoring in the bottom of the first with a triple by Joey Lye, followed by a two-run home run by Kaleigh Rafter. Jenna Salling then hit a double and was brought in by a solid single from Megan Gurski.  The score was 3-0 for Canada heading into the second inning. Brazil was unable to score in the top of the second, while an error by Simone Suetsugu at short stop allowed Jenn Yee and Larissa Franklin to score in the bottom half of the inning, leaving the score 5-0 in Canada’s favour.  Both teams left a runner stranded in each of the third and fourth innings, while Canada shut down the Brazil offence in the top of the fifth and did not allow any runners on base.  In the bottom of the fifth Canada left one runner on.  The top of the sixth was scoreless for Brazil as well, while Canada scored one more in the bottom of the inning by stringing together a solid double by Yee and a single by Lye, making the score 6-0 for Canada.  The top of the seventh inning proved no better for Brazil as they left two runners stranded.  Ciara earned the win with 6 strike outs and no hits, while Nilze Higa suffered the loss with 7 hits and 1 strike out.

 

USA 9 vs. Puerto Rico 2

 

Both halves of the first inning remained scoreless, while Puerto Rico had no more luck in the top of the second inning. The United States capitalized on a walk by scoring Valerie Arioto on a hard hit by Amanda Chidester. The inning ended with the United States up 1-0 and leaving one runner on base.  Puerto Rico was unable to get on the board in the third, while the United States added to their score by capitalizing on another walk and scoring Haylie McCleney on a RBI single by Lauren Gibson. Gibson was then brought in on a RBI triple by Arioto, who then scored off a RBI single by Sierra Romero.  Heading into the fourth inning, the United States lead Puerto Rico 4-0. Puerto Rico scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth with Karla Claudio hitting a double and scoring Sahvanna Jaquish.  The United States were unsuccessful in the fourth, leaving the score 4-1 for the Americans.  In the top of the fifth, Puerto Rico scored Dayanara Diaz with an RBI double from Monica Santos. Again, the United States were scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, leaving the score at 4-2 in their favour. The Americans quickly shut down Puerto Rico in the top of the sixth before clinching their win in the bottom of the sixth. Two quick singles by Romero and Michelle Moultrie loaded first and second base, with both advancing to second and third respectively after a sacrifice bunt by Chidester.  A RBI single by McCleney drove in two runs, leaving runners on first and second base. Raven Chavanne then hit a three-run home run to clinch the 9-2 win for the United States.

2:00pm EST: United States (1-0) vs. Brazil (0-1)

4:30pm EST: Dominican Republic (0-1) vs. Puerto Rico (0-1)

7:00pm EST: Canada (1-0) vs. Cuba (1-0)
