Team Canada Takes First Loss at 2015
Pan American Games against United States

(Ajax, ON) The Canadian Women’s Softball Team suffered its first loss by a score of 7-0 against the United States in their third preliminary game at the 2015 Pan American Games. The United States pulled ahead of the group of six teams, improving their record to 3-0, while Canada is now 2-1 going into Wednesday’s game.

Jen Yee (North Delta, BC) started off the top of the first by drawing a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joey Lye (Toronto, ON). Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON) then reached on an intentional walk, but unfortunately both runners were left stranded. The United States did not waste any time getting on the board by scoring on a two-run homerun by Valerie Arioto. The Americans left the first inning with a 3-0 lead over Team Canada after stringing together a pair of singles for their third run. The second inning proved unsuccessful for both teams despite a single by Megan Gurski (Dalmeny, SK) for the Canadians and a double by Kellie Fox for the United States.

In the top of the third, Yee was able to reach first yet again with a single but a strikeout and a fly ball to shortstop left her stranded once more. Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC) came into the circle to replace Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) and the Canadians got out of the third inning unscathed with the United States leaving one runner stranded on third, and the score remained 3-0 for the United States.

After Gurski reached on a walk in the top of the fourth, the United States brought Jaclyn Traina in to relieve Sara Nevins. Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) put the ball in play, but the American defence managed to get the force out at second base for their third out. The United States extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom half of the inning with Janelle Lindvall being cashed in on a triple to right field by Haylie McCleney. Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) finished off the inning with a catch in left field for the third out.

Two strikeouts by Traina started off the fifth inning, followed by Yee making a solid connection for a single up the middle. Traina managed another strikeout to finish off the top half of the inning and leaving Yee on base. Despite a beautiful grab by Timpf on a line drive up the third base line in the bottom half of the fifth, the United States was able to score Sierra Romero with a run-scoring single.

The top of the sixth was no more successful for the Canadians as two strikeouts and a fly ball to shortstop finished off the top half of the inning. The United States sealed the win by getting two runners on early with back-to-back singles, and scoring their last run of the game with a solid hit to centerfield for a final score of 7-0 for the United States in six innings.

Box Score: United States 7 vs. Canada 0

Hovinga took the loss in the circle after one inning, allowing three runs and five hits. Cater pitched the majority of the game, allowing one hit and one run in her three innings, and striking out two batters. Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) finished off the game with one inning in the circle, allowing five hits and striking out one. Yee was consistent at the plate, reaching first on two hits and drawing one walk. A single by Gurski added to Canada’s total of three hits in the six innings of play.

Earlier in the day, Puerto Rico beat Cuba 3-2 in extra innings, while Brazil and the Dominican Republic battled through nine innings of play with Brazil coming out on top for a final score of 2-1.

Team Canada (2-1) continues their Pan American Games schedule with a game against the Dominican Republic (0-3) at 7:00pm EDT on Wednesday.
