2015 Pan American Games - Women’s Softball Day 4 Summary

July 24, 2015

Toronto, ON

USA 11 vs. Dominican Republic 0

The first game of the day was a quick one with the United States dominating the Dominican Republic in just three and a half innings for an 11-0 win.  In the top of the first, American pitcher Jaclyn Traina struck out the side, and the Americans headed to the plate for their first shot at some runs.  Despite an early two outs in the bottom of the first, a triple to left field by Kelsey Stewart got things going for the United States.  Valerie Arioto was next up, getting hit by a pitch to advance to first.  Amanda Chidester then reached first on the dropped third strike rule, and with an overthrow at first Stewart was able to score.  Another wild pitch caught Sierra Romero, allowing her to get on base.  A solid triple by Janelle Lindvall then allowed three more runs to score, extending the Americans’ lead to 4-0.  The United States continued their hits with a bomb over the fence by Kellie Fox for two more runs.  The Dominican Republic would eventually get out of the inning with the United States leaving two runners on base, leaving the score 6-0 for the Americans heading into the second.  In the top of the second, the Dominican Republic went scoreless yet again, leaving no runners on.  In the bottom of the second, the United States scored five more runs by a RBI single from Chidester to score Stewart, followed by a three-run home run from Romero.  Fox then put another one over the fence, extending the United States’ lead to 11-0 after only two at-bats.  The third inning would remain scoreless for both teams.  Despite Geovanny Nunez drawing a walk, the top of the fourth inning proved unsuccessful for the Dominican Republic yet again.  The game ended after four innings with the United States up 11-0.  The Americans’ record of 5-0 will allow them to advance to the first vs. second playoff game on Friday, July 24th.

Brazil 5 vs. Cuba 3

Cuba and Brazil both went down in order in the first two innings. In the top of the third, Cuba got on the board with a triple by Maylin Sanchez, followed by a RBI single by Katia Coello.  Brazil went down in order in the bottom half of the inning yet again, leaving no one on base. In the top of the fourth, Cuba managed to add two more hits to their total, but ultimately was unable to score.  In the bottom half of the frame, Cuba’s defence was strong, not allowing any runners to get on base.  In the top half of the fifth, Cuba managed to extend their lead by two more runs, after Sanchez reached first on a bunt, and was later cashed in on a RBI single by Yanisleidys Casanova. Casanova then scored on a RBI double by Leanneyi Gomez.  In the bottom half of the fifth, Brazil was shutdown once again, leaving the score 3-0 for Cuba after five complete innings of play.  In the top of the sixth, Brazil brought Nilze Higa to the circle and made quick work of the Cuban offence, only needing three batters to make their three outs.  Brazil came out strong in the bottom of the sixth. Stringing together a single from Barbara Woll and drawing a couple errors, the Brazilian team found themselves with the bases loaded and no outs.  Mayra Sayumi

then put the ball in play, reaching second on an error and scoring two runs.  A wild pitch during Gabriela Dos Santos’ at-bat allowed the tying run to score.  A sacrifice fly by Veronika Fukunishi allowed one more to score, followed by a RBI single by Vivian Morimoto to bring Brazil’s lead to 5-3 over Cuba.  With only three more outs needed for the win, Brazil managed three outs with Cuba leaving two runners on base for the win.  This win earned Brazil a spot in the playoff round on Friday, July 24th.

Canada 1 vs. Puerto Rico 0

Canada started the top of the first shutting down the Puerto Rican offence with a strikeout and two groundouts.  They responded with Jen Yee hitting a lead-off single to start the bottom half of the inning.  After a fly ball was caught for an out, Puerto Rico’s fielders turned a double play, catching Yee out at second and Kaleigh Rafter out at first, leaving the inning scoreless for both teams.  Sara Groenewegen came out firing in the top of the second, striking out the side.  The bottom half of the second was no more successful for Canada, leaving one runner left on base.  In the top of the third inning, Puerto Rico managed to get on base with a single by Galis Lozada, but the team was unable to cash her in.  Canada got their one and only run in the bottom half of the inning, with Larissa Franklin reaching first by fielder’s choice and scoring on a solid RBI double to right field by Joey Lye.  The fourth inning proved scoreless for both teams, with each leaving a runner on base at the end of their at-bat.  The same pattern emerged for Puerto Rico in the top of the fifth, with Dayanira Diaz reaching first on an error but not getting the chance to score.  In the bottom of the fifth, the Canadians managed to load the bases, but with only one out, pitcher Karla Claudio managed to draw two fly balls out of the Canadian offence, getting out of the inning with no runs scoring.  The sixth inning went scoreless again for both teams, leaving the score at 1-0 in the Canadians’ favour heading into the top of the seventh.  The Canadian defence was solid for the last half-inning of the game, finishing off the Puerto Rican offence with a foul ball to left field caught by Erika Polidori, an out at first by Rafter on the dropped third strike rule, and a groundout by third baseman Megan Timpf. Groenewegen picked up her third win of the tournament in the circle, allowing three hits and striking out eight.  Claudio suffered the loss, allowing four hits and walking four batters.
