Canada Records Two Shutouts at WBSC
Junior Women’s World Softball Championship

(Oklahoma City, OK) The Canadian Junior Women’s National Team registered a pair of shutout victories at the WBSC Junior Women’s World Championship on Tuesday, blanking Argentina 7-0 in five innings before shutting out Great Britain 4-0. Taylor Lundrigan (Abbotsford, BC) had a big day at the plate with five hits while four pitchers split the workload in the circle to keep their opponents off the scoreboard.

In the first game, Argentina threatened first as they drew a pair of one-out walks, but were kept off the scoreboard when the runners completed a double steal with the throw to third from the catcher going into left field and the lead runner was tagged out on a play at the plate. Canada’s bats went right to work in the bottom of the inning as Kelsey Jenkins (Delta, BC) led off with a triple over the centerfielder and scored on a single to left by Callum Pilgrim (Abbotsford, BC). Emma Entzminger (Victoria, BC) followed with a double to put runners on second and third before Lundrigan hit a two-run single to right to give Canada a 3-0 lead.

Both teams were retired in order in the second and Canada added a run to its lead in the bottom of the third. Entzminger and Lundrigan hit back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on the corners before Brielle McCullough (Saskatoon, SK) hit a sacrifice fly to left. Argentina got a good chance to score in the fourth with a leadoff single followed by a batter reaching on catcher’s interference, but Canadian reliever Ashley Penney (Victoria, BC) got two big strikeouts followed by a ground ball to keep them off the scoreboard.

Team Canada put the game away by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the run rule. Entzminger got things started again with a single to left and scored on a single by Lundrigan, who advanced to second on the throw to the plate. A passed ball moved Lundrigan ahead to third and McCullough walked to put runners on the corners before Alisha Welch (Langley, BC) smashed a triple to right to bring both runners in to score for the win.

Box Score: Canada 7 vs. Argentina 0

Desirae Villanueva (Surrey, BC) started the game and earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, pitching three hitless innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Penney allowed two hits and struck out two. Lundrigan had three singles and drove in three runs while Entzminger had a double and two singles and scored three times. Welch added a two-run triple and Jenkins also tripled, while Pilgrim chipped in with a single.

Against Great Britain, Canada got two runners on base on a hit by pitch and a walk in the bottom of the first but was unable to push anyone in to score. Great Britain responded with a pair of singles in the top half of the second, but both runners were left stranded in scoring position on a pop out to second to end the inning. Canada went on to open the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, as Julianna Waldner (Altona, MB) reached on a dropped third strike and quickly scored on a double to center by Jenkins, who advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a single by Entzminger as Canada took a 2-0 lead.

Both teams went down in order in the fourth before Great Britain got two more singles in the top of the fifth, but Canada was once again able to get out unscathed. After two quick outs in the bottom of the frame, Entzminger was hit by a pitch followed by a single by Lundrigan, with Entzminger advancing to third and Lundrigan to second on the throw. Welch then hit a two-run single to left to increase Canada’s lead to 4-0. Madison Clarke (Edmonton, AB) entered the game in relief to start the sixth and retired Great Britain in order in each of the last two innings to seal the win.

Box Score: Canada 4 vs. Great Britain 0

Madison Hope (Winnipeg, MB) earned the win for Canada, scattering five hits over five innings and striking out three, while Clarke struck out two in two perfect innings of relief. Lundrigan registered a pair of singles, with Jenkins adding a run-scoring double and Welch providing a two-run single. Entzminger had a single and drove in a run to complete Canada’s five hits.
