Late rally leads Lords to sweep of Sting

OSHAWA, Ont. – After bringing the mercy rule into play in the opening game of their doubleheader on Friday night, the Durham College women's softball team looked like they were going to split their night against the Seneca Sting until the sixth inning.
Trailing 4-2, the Lords were able to bring two runners home in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of errors by the Sting. With Justine Pike at the plate and two aboard she put down a bunt, which rolled to pitcher Brianna Bader. After holding the runners she threw the ball out of the first baseman's reach, which allowed both runners to score on the play and tie the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, after holding Seneca off the scoreboard in the top half of the inning, Durham started to put the pressure back on the Sting. With two on and two out, Alanna Stanoev came to the plate. It was her hit up the middle, which eluded the middle infielders, that scored Mariah Gallant for the walk-off victory.
Caitlyn Omelanchuk picked up her second victory of the night on the mound after throwing 3.2 innings of the game, allowing one hit and striking out four batters. She came in to relieve Megan McDonald, who pitched 3.1 innings, while allowing four earned runs on seven hits.
Pike led the Lords at the plate going 1-for-2 with two runs.
Bader took the loss for Seneca after pitching 6.2 innings with three strikeouts. She had no earned runs on five hits and one walk. Megan Heesaker was 2-for-3 with one run to lead the Sting offence.
In the opening game of the evening, which Durham won 12-2 in six innings, Omelanchuk earned her third victory of the OCAA season. She allowed no earned runs, three hits and four walks over her six innings of work, while striking out seven.
At the plate Rebecca Ropp was 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the offence for Durham.
Tania Copegog-Cole took the loss for the Sting. She allowed seven earned runs on 13 hits and one walk, with two strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Shawna Niskanen was 1-for-3 with a run.
Durham's sweep of Seneca on Friday night improves their record to 5-1 on the season, which puts them in first place in the OCAA early in the season.
The Lords will continue their home stand on Tuesday night when the Mohawk Mountaineers come to town. First pitch for their doubleheader is scheduled for 6 p.m.
