Lords lose marathon game to Humber
OCAA Women's Softball
Game One: Humber defeated Durham 10-2
Game Two: Humber defeated Durham 13-12 (11 innings)
OSHAWA, Ont. - It was an extended battle of the top teams in OCAA women's softball Thursday night as the Humber Hawks and Durham Lords second half of their doubleheader went 11 innings.
When it was all said and done, Humber (6-1) walked away with a pair of victories beating Durham (7-3) 10-2 and 13-12.
In game two Durham looked to even up the night but failed to hold on to a 6-0 first inning lead and an 11-8 seventh inning lead. With the teams combining to score 24 runs over the first seven innings, they failed to score a single run in three extra innings even with international rules in effect.
The Lords had a great chance for a walk off in the eighth, as Caitlyn Omelanchuk (Whitby, Ont.) flied out to left field with a runner on third. Rebecca Ropp (Milverton, Ont.) tagged up but was gunned out a home, as catcher Lauren Hollidge just got a piece of her as she tried to jump over the tag.
Humber would eventually score a single run in the 11th and held the Lords offence at check in the home half of the inning to pick up the win.
Omelanchuk pitched in both games for the Lords, completing 13 innings on the mound. Myranda Pierson was just as busy for the Hawks as she pitched 14.2 innings, earning the win in both games.
Megan McDonald (Brampton, Ont.) had quite the night at the plate for Durham going on to record a team-high five hits.
Durham will have the weekend off to rest up for a doubleheader in Kitchener against Conestoga on Sept. 29.
