Omelanchuk, Axhorn & Conroy named athletes of the week

OSHAWA, Ont. - Craig Conroy (Bowmanville, Ont.), Caitlyn Omelanchuk (Whitby, Ont.) and Nicholas Axhorn (Pickering, Ont.) have been named the Durham College student-athletes of the week presented by Boston Pizza North Oshawa for the period ending Oct. 4.

Conroy, a fourth-year marketing major, led the Lords to their second straight CCAA championship finishing in fourth place in the team competition. The Lords veteran had the best individual finish for the Lords at the championship, tied for fifth at nine-over par. This was the Lords best finish at the championship since 2012 when Shea Varty was fourth.

Omelanchuk, a first-year police foundations student, was dominant in the Lords softball doubleheader sweep of the Seneca Sting on Thursday night. At the plate in the opening game she hit for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs and a run scored. On the mound she went five innings with six strikeouts, while allowing six hits.

In the second game Omelanchuk's hot bat continued as she was 2-for-2 with one run.

The women's softball team is back in action Tuesday at Durham Field against the Conestoga Condors. The doubleheader gets underway at 6 p.m.

Axhorn, a third-year social services student, led the men's soccer team defensively over the weekend as the Lords picked up four of six points. Against the CCAA No. 4 ranked Algonquin Thunder on Saturday, Durham became only the second team this season to hand Algonquin a tie after they started the season 3-0-0. The 1-1 draw proved to be important, but Sunday's 1-0 victory over the St. Lawrence Vikings may have been even more important as the team is now in a three-way tie for second in the OCAA east division with eight points.

In their draw and victory, Axhorn was looked to as a leader in the backfield, especially helping to hold the Thunder to just one goal as their goal differential is plus-12 through five games.

This Friday the men's soccer team is home against the St. Lawrence Vikings. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Vaso's Field.
