WFAST finishes regular season at 16-6

Compete for third National Championship this weekend

The
Wilfrid Laurier women's fastpitch team wrapped up the regular season
with a 2-2 record, improving to 16-6 on the season and currently sit in
third place in the OIWFA.

Saturday afternoon saw the McMaster
Marauders visit the Golden Hawks, fighting for their playoff lives. In
the bottom of the third, Amelia Ballak had a slap hit single and was later scored on an error. Rachel Warmington then hit a line-shot triple to take the 2-0 lead. Ellen Westlaken and Alanna Hentges
answered with back to back singles and the Golden Hawks were up by
four. With two leadoff singles in the bottom of the fifth by Warmington
and Campagnolo, three straight walks to Westlaken, Alanna Hentges, and Monica Seth
set up an infield single by Ballak for the Golden Hawks 7-0 mercy run
game. Ballak and Warmington were both 2-3 at the plate and Warmington
threw her second shut out of the season.

In game two against
McMaster, the Golden Hawks were caught off-guard and before they knew
it, they were down 7-0 to the Marauders. The lone light spot for the
Hawks was a pinch hit single by Marissa Woodburn to eliminate the perfect game from the McMaster pitcher.

Sunday
afternoon was the closing double header of the season against the Brock
Badgers, who were right on the heels of the Golden Hawks in the
standings. With the Badgers up 7-1 in the fourth, it looked like the
Hawks were down and out when Warmington led off with a triple to
centrefield and Seth scored her with a single to left. Playing some
small ball, Ballak stepped up to the plate and slapped a seeing-eye
single to score two. The Hawks were back in it, down 7-4. Brock would
respond with one more of their own in the 6th and took the opening game
8-4.

Game two was a pitchers dual between the two clubs. In the
top of the third, Bobbi Sue Hentges reached base on an error when Ballak
moved her to second on a fielder’s choice. Campagnolo then drove a line
drive single to right field to score Hentges to open the scoring. The
Hawks would add another in the fifth, this time when Marissa Woodburn
reached on an error and Warmington cashed in Woodburn after some small
ball at the top of the order. Warmington and Campagnolo each had two
hits for the Hawks and Seth added another single for a three hit day for
her. Campagnolo threw her seventh shutout of the year.

The Golden
Hawks currently sit in third place in OIWFA action and this week will
travel to Durham College for the National Championships. This is the
third appearance for the Golden Hawks at the National Championships,
having captured a silver medal in 2008 and gold medal on home soil in
2009. Laurier will play the University of Regina, University of
Saskatchewan, and Conestoga College in round robin action.
