Introducing new inductees into the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame

Cambridge Times

This is the second of a two-part series on new inductees going into the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame.

Cambridge will honour some of its best athletes on May 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sports Hall of Fame located at Cambridge Centre.

Curator and archivist Jim Cox of the Sports Hall will have the latest pictures and stories on display.

He urges the public to attend the event and meet some of the new inductees.

A ceremony to induct three local athletes, two builders and two teams is free for the public to attend.

Three athletes being honoured include water-skiing champion Jeff McClintock, wheelchair curling star Jim Armstrong and fastball wizard Dan Donahue.

McClintock is as comfortable on water as he is on land. For more than three decades he mastered water-skiing and captured several Canadian National titles.

He was a member of the Canadian National Team for eight years and skied in four World Championships.

Going into halls of fame is not new to McClintock.

He is in the Waterloo County Hall of Fame and the Water Ski Waterboard Canada Hall of Fame.

When it comes to throwing rocks on ice, there are few better than wheelchair curler Jim Armstrong, a new inductee to the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame.

Skip Armstrong and his team of curlers have won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Paralympics Games and an Olympic gold medal in Sochi Russia in 2014 Paralympics Games.

A true sportsman, he is the first to praise his team of Dennis Thiessen, Ina Forrest, Sonja Gaudet and Mark Ideson.

Another inductee is fastball first baseman Dan Donahue.

With his gold-glove he is unbeatable at first base. Add to this his hot bat at the plate and it puts him in an all-star class of athletes.

Donahue played for the Hespeler Symplicity Softball Ontario Intermediate “B” Champs in 1973.

He had experience in six World Championship tournaments.

As a coach in Owen Sound, Milverton, and Jarvis, Donahue’s teams collected medals in numerous Canadian Championships.

Two local teams will also be inducted at this event: the Galt Midget Hockey team of 1983 and the Cambridge Chiefs Midget Lacrosse team of 2006.
