USA Softball Junior Men’s National Team endures two losses in exhibition games

Normal, Ill. – Twenty-one young men from across the United States continue to compete for a spot on the 17-man Junior Men’s National Team (JMNT) roster, which will be chosen at a later date to represent the United States at the 2016 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Junior Men’s World Championship (JMWC), the Amateur Softball Association (ASA)/USA Softball announced today. The championship will feature 13 countries, including the U.S., who will battle it out for the chance to take home the international title in Junior Men’s Fast Pitch. Athletes continued their training camp by closing out the final day of the Bloomington Stix Midsummer Classic tournament today, playing Circle Tap at 9 a.m. CT and the Bloomington Stix at 4 p.m. CT.

Athletes are being coached under the direction of JMNT Head Coach Tim Lyon, and assistant coaches Tyron McKinney, Dan Nessler and Scott Standerfer. The JMNT will also be traveling to Ashland, Ohio for additional exhibition games prior to the JMWC, which will be held in Midland, Mich. at Currie Stadium in Emerson Park.

Exhibition Game Three: USA Softball Junior Men’s National Team 1, Circle Tap 12 (5)

Team USA dropped a 12-1 decision to Circle Tap Sunday morning in what was only their third exhibition game playing together as a team during this week’s training camp. With two outs in the first inning, Circle Tap launched two back-to-back triples managing to plate one before USA Softball’s JMNT Steven Nessler (Mankato, Minn.) ended the half-inning by catching a fly out to centerfield. Isaac Hormann (Young America, Minn.) led off for Team USA by hitting a single but was called out at second after a fielder’s choice on a single by Derek Martin (Stevens, Pa.). Team USA continued to push forward but did not plate a run until JMNT catcher Brady Parker (Midland, Tex.) crossed home in the fifth inning. After five, Circle Tap extended their lead to 12-1 which ended the game via run-rule.

Exhibition Game Four: USA Softball Junior Men’s National Team 1, Bloomington Stix 6

In their last game of the tournament, Team USA fell to the Bloomington Stix, 6-1, at O’Neil Park. Team USA’s only run would score in the top of the third after shortstop Jonathan Broadbear (Bloomington, Ill.) advanced to third as a result of a walk and two passed balls in which he made it home following a single by Isaac Hormann. The Bloomington Stix would respond with two of their own in the third, extending their lead to 3-1 after three innings of work. Trailing, Team USA was unable to answer offensively to the Stix’s own multiple-run innings to follow and would eventually record a 6-1 loss.

Up next for the JMNT are scheduled practices throughout the week in addition to a series of doubleheaders set to take place at O’Neil Park Tuesday, while Wednesday and Thursday’s games will be held at Champion.
