Canada Improves Record to 3-1 with Win
over Mexico at World Cup of Softball XI

(Oklahoma City, OK) The Canadian Women’s National Softball Team bounced back from last night’s loss by defeating Mexico 4-1 in a game that was interrupted twice due to the weather at the World Cup of Softball XI. All five runs were scored in the third as Mexico scored the first run in the top of the inning before Canada responded with four in the bottom.

Mexico managed a two-out single in the first but the next batter flew out, while Canada put two runners on base on a hit by pitch to Joey Lye (Toronto, ON) and a single by Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) but both were caught stealing. Mexico went down in order in the second before the game interrupted due to lightning strikes. Once play resumed, Canada got a two-out baserunner one an error but a ground out ended the inning. Play was suspended once again for a rain delay in the third.

When the game got going again, Mexico smacked a leadoff double and the runner was sacrificed to third before scoring on a single to put Mexico on the board. Canada went to work in the bottom of the inning as Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) drew a leadoff walk and Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, BC) reached on an error. A fielder’s choice on a sacrifice bunt attempt retired Wideman at third, but Lye stepped up and delivered a triple to the right field corner to plate two runs. Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) later singled to right to push Lye in to score, and after advancing to third on an error, scored on a single to left by Megan Gurski (Dalmeny, SK) to give Canada a 4-1 lead.

Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) managed a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth but the next batter lined out, while Mexico led off the top of the fifth with a double but Canadian pitcher Sara Plourde (Fredericton, NB) was able to leave her stranded at third after a sacrifice bunt, a groundout and a strikeout. Canada got a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the sixth on a hit by pitch to Wideman and a single by Franklin but could not add to its lead. Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to earn the save.

Box Score: Canada 4 vs. Mexico 1

Plourde pitched six strong innings for Canada, allowing one run on four hits and striking out three to earn the win, while Hovinga struck out two and registered the save. Lye had the big two-run triple for Canada, with singles going to Hayward, Polidori, Salling, Gurski and Franklin as Canada outhit Mexico 6-4.

Team Canada (3-1) will now take on Japan (3-0) in a game that was scheduled for 3:00pm CDT but will likely be pushed back due to the weather delays earlier today. Live scoring and web streaming is available through USA Softball’s website.
