Midland, MI - Junior Black Sox into Final of softball World champs


The Temperzone Junior Black Sox have beaten Canada in dramatic style 12-7 to play in the gold medal game of the WBSC Junior Softball World Championships in Midland, USA.

 

The bottom of the first saw New Zealand take an early 3-0 lead. New Zealand’s rally started when Jarome McKenzie singled, another single by Callum Bishop then moved McKenzie from first to second. Callum Lewis-Carson singled, bringing home McKenzie and Bishop. More runs crossed the plate when McKenzie scored on an RBI single by Dante Matakatea.   

 

Canada quickly replied in the top of the second with 4 runs and a further 3 in the next 2 innings to go up 7-4 after their fifth turn at bat.

 

The New Zealand bats came alive in the fifth with 4 dingers and 7 runs to go from 7-4 down to 11-7 up. Lewis-Carson, Zac Boyd, McKenzie all took the ball deep but it was Jacob Zurcher who started the slugfest with his three run shot to tie the game up 7-7 and bring the Junior Black Sox back into contention. 

 

McKenzie had a great day with the bat racking up three RBIs on three hits for New Zealand, he singled in the first inning, doubled in the second, and homered in the fifth inning.

 
Adam Woon started for New Zealand but was replaced after two innings after giving up four hits and four runs. Bailey Hamilton and Sam Marley relived for one inning each but were unable to stop the run flow until New Zealand ace Daniel Chapman took the mound. Chapman held Canada hitless over 2 2/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out five.
 
Canada’s Tyler Randerson was the game's losing pitcher allowing seven runs in four innings, walked one and struck out three.
 
New Zealand hitters combined for 14 hits, 10 RBIs and nine runs scored.
 
New Zealand will have a chance of going one better than at the previous world champs where they finished second to Argentina. The kiwis will take on Japan at 11am nz time today. Japan have beaten New Zealand twice in the tournament thus far.
 
New Zealand has not won’t the Junior World Championships since 1989.
