On Sunday in Tavistock, James Todhunter’s homer in the top of the seventh inning lifted the Hill United Chiefs to a 5-4 win over the New York Gremlins to capture the Cephas Roth Memorial Tournament.

The No. 1 raked Chiefs got behind early after the Gremlins struck twice in the first inning off of starter Justin Schofield. The Chiefs responded in a big way though, scoring two in the second inning and two more in the third, before the Gremlins chipped away to tie things with a run in the fourth and sixth innings.

Schofield got the win, allowing four runs on four hits, while striking out six.

Nick Shailes also added a homer for the Chiefs.

Earlier in the day, Adam Folkard struck out seven batters en route to throwing a no-hitter in a 8-0 win over the Can-Am Twins.

Shailes again belted a homer to lead the way with three RBI and a double, while Ben Wideman knocked in a pair of runs. Brad Ezekiel and Mark Johnson also had RBI.

The Chiefs began the tourney in dominant fashion, not allowing a run in its first three games.

Schofield threw five innings in the opener, while his teammates pounded out two runs in the first, four runs in the third and another in the fifth to mercy the Toronto Batmen 7-0.

Ezekiel had two RBI and a homerun to lead the offence, while Bruno Motroni also knocked in a pair of runs, while Nicolas Carril and Shailes had one RBI each.

Saturday, Jason Hill had four RBI and belted two bombs in a 13-0 win over the Shakespeare Falcons.

Ezekiel and Motroni also hit homeruns, while Pablo Migliavacca thre a three-hitter in four innings of work before the mercy rule came into effect. He struck out five batters.

About an hour later, the Chiefs bats kept rolling, belting out 13 hits in a 12-0 win over the Diamond Jaxx.

Shane Boland had five RBI to lead the way and also hit a homerun, while Jeff Ellsworth and Shailes each knocked in three runs. Mark Johnson also had an RBI.

Jason Hill got the win in five innings of work, giving up only one hit, while striking out 10.

The Chiefs finally gave up a run later in the day. Despite the Hallman Cubs scoring in the top half of the third inning, the Chiefs responded with two in the bottom half, while adding two more in the fourth and sixth innings to come away with a 6-1 victory.

Hill, Boland and Wideman each hit homers, while Folkard, Schofield and Migliavacca shared duties on the mound.

The week before in Elkland, PA, the Chiefs went 5-0 to grab a share of the Elkland Open championship with the Can-Am Twins.

The Chiefs began the weekend with a 9-1 win over A-1 Power, from Grand Rapids, MI, before edging the Kingston Axmen 6-4 and Toronto Batmen 3-2.

After beating the Batmen on Sunday 8-3 and then pounding the Gremlins 11-4 in the semifinal, the championship game was called because of travel commitments.

The Chiefs are back in action this weekend at the ASA Men’s Major Championships in South Bend, IN, before they head to Grand Rapids, for the ISC World Tournament, which runs from August 11 to 20.
