OCAA Women's Softball

Game One: Durham defeated Humber 4-3

Game Two: Humber defeated Durham 5-3

BRAMPTON, Ont. - With a chance to sure up second place in the OCAA on Thursday night, the Durham College softball team will now have to wait for the weekend to see if they can guarantee a first or second place finish.

In Brampton, where the OCAA softball championship will be hosted in a week's time, the Lords split with the Humber Hawks - giving Humber the chance to still finish second, pending this weekend's results.

Durham opened the night with a quick run in the first inning with Emily Hill (Ohsweken, Ont.) driving Melissa McKnight (Brampton, Ont.) home.

Humber answered in the bottom half, scoring three runs on RBIs from Sarah Franchetto and former Lord Sam MacCallum to lead 3-1.

A sac fly by Jaimie Clarke (Elmvale, Ont.) in the top of the second brought home Sarah Seifried (Drayton, Ont.) to cut the lead to one. The final scoring was done in the top of the third when McKnight and Cassidy Scott (Brampton, Ont.) scored to give the Lords the 4-3 lead.

From there the pitchers shut down both teams, with Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) earning the complete game victory. She allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk.

Rachel Matheson-Green allowed two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out for Durham batters.

Hill took the loss for Durham in the second half of the doubleheader, going 5.1 innings before Black entered the game in relief. Hill allowed three earned runs on eight hits, while Black allowed one on three hits over 0.2 innings.

Myranda Pierson earned the win with three runs, none earned, allowed on six hits and two walks. She struck out four batters.

Similar to the opening game the Lords scored early, this time Caleigh Coels (Duncan, B.C.) drove in all three of Durham's runs on a triple in the top of the second.

That is where the score stood until the bottom of the fifth when MacCallum homered to cut the Lords lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth the Hawks pressed hard and scored three runs on three separate hits to take the 5-3 three lead. Pierson shut the door in the seventh to split the doubleheader.

Tied with the St. Clair Saints, Durham plays host to the Saints on Saturday afternoon at Durham Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is 1 p.m. The Lords then finish off their regular season against the Fanshawe Falcons on Sunday. First pitch is also 1 p.m.
