Waterloo, ON - - Golden Hawks rebounded to sweep the Brock Badgers

Walk-off win lifts Laurier Softball to 6-2 record
After losing a pair of games to McMaster, the Golden Hawks rebounded to sweep the Brock Badgers thanks to some strong pitching and timely hitting

The women’s softball team improved to 6-2 over the weekend with a 2-2 record on the road. The Golden Hawks travelled to Hamilton on Friday night to take on the McMaster Marauders. After coming out to an early lead, the Golden Hawks let that lead vanish off a number of uncharacteristic defensive errors, with McMaster eventually taking the lead in the bottom of the sixth for an 8-6 final and the first loss of the Laurier season.

It was much the same in game two as the Golden Hawks came out to an early lead but untimely Laurier errors got McMaster back into the game to eventually take the lead. Laurier fought back in the seventh inning score twice but coming up just short, being downed 7-6.

The Golden Hawks were back on the road on Sunday to take on a talented Brock Badgers squad. Sabrina Barko got her first start as a Golden Hawk and was lights out – throwing a complete game shutout. It was a pitcher’s dual for much of the game, as the Golden Hawks scored twice in the top of the second inning. Kathleen Gregus led off with a single and was sacrificed to second from Katie Matheson-Green. Sonya Carnegie then scored Gregus to take the lead followed by a rocket off the bat of Sydney Scott for a triple and the two run lead. It would stay that way until the fifth when Laurier opened the floodgates and scored in the final three innings for the 7-0 win. The game became out of reach with the bases loaded and Jade McGarr hit a double up the middle to score three of her four RBIs in the game.

Game two was another pitching gem by both squads. The Golden Hawks gave up two runs in the first inning but answered back with one of their own in the bottom of the first. The score would remain 2-1 until the fifth inning when Laurier scored three runs and took a 4-2 lead. Bobbi Sue Hentges and Briana Norlock both singled followed by a walk to McGarr and a bases loaded walk Alanna Hentges to tie the game. Gregus then scored two more runs with a single right-centerfield. Brock however then scored one in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game at four apiece. In the bottom of the seventh Briana Norlock led off with a single eye single, advancing to second on a pass ball. McGarr then pounded a lineshot to centerfield but a spectacular catch by the Badgers defender kept Norlock at second. Alanna Hentges then hit a walk off double to left field out of the reach of any Badger player as the Golden Hawks won 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh. Katie Matheson-Green pitched five strong innings when Barko came in relief.

The Golden Hawks improved to 6-2 on the season and will be on the road again this weekend taking on the Windsor Lancers and a rematch of last year’s OIWFA Championship game with the Western Mustangs.
