Palmerston North, NZ - - New Zealand to host 2020 Junior Men’s World Cup

New Zealand will host the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Junior Men’s U18 Softball World Cup in 2020.

World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) made the announcement in Rome on Monday (NZT), saying Softball New Zealand (Softball NZ) had proved it was capable of staging a world class tournament.

Canada, USA, Argentina, and Czech Republic had expressed interest in hosting the event.

The junior men’s softball world cup has only been held in the southern hemisphere three times with Argentina 2012, Australia 2001, and New Zealand last hosting in 1993. Eight of the past 11 world cups have been staged in North America.

The 2020 event will be held in Palmerston North’s Colquhoun Park, a venue that will be upgraded and transformed for the event says Softball NZ CEO Tony Giles.

“I’m incredibly excited the event will be held in Palmerston North,” says Giles.

“Palmerston North, led by Mayor Grant Smith and his council has provided outstanding support and leadership for our game in recent years, and we are truly excited to be partnering provincial New Zealand to showcase this world class sporting opportunity” said Giles.

Palmerston North Mayor, Grant Smith says the city is delighted to host the World Cup event and will do all it can to ensure the event is a success while leaving a legacy of great facilities for the city.

“Palmerston North hosts many large-scale sports events. Hosting a World Cup allows us to showcase how a regional city can support an international event. Our softball players have shown how they lead the world with their performance - the city will showcase to the world New Zealand hospitality and world-class facilities.

The 9-day tournament will run from February 22 - March 1, 2020 with 12 International Federations participating.
