KITCHENER — Philanthropist and developer Jim Hallman has been named 2018 Kitchener-Waterloo Citizen of the Year.

The award recognizes Hallman's contributions to a number of organizations and initiatives strengthening Waterloo Region.

"He has quietly made a difference in the lives of many — personally and through his role as chair of the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation in support of children and families, health care and post-secondary education," said the Lions Club of Kitchener, which sponsors the award.

Hallman has also been a keen champion of fastball in the region, supporting the Kitchener Hallman Twins fastball team, International Softball Congress World Tournament, the annual Peter Hallman Memorial Fast Pitch Tournament and the Peter Hallman Ball Yard.

"Creating a supportive community for our friends and neighbours has long been a priority for our family," Hallman said in a news release. "My grandfather taught my father, who in turn mentored his children to give back, something that I hope I have instilled in my children, too."

The award, from the Lions Club of Kitchener, has been presented yearly since 1957, when University of Waterloo founder Ira Needles was honoured. Other recipients include Walter Bean, Jack Harper, Owen Lackenbauer, Mac Voisin, Elizabeth Witmer, Neil Aitchison and last year's recipient, Ron Schlegel.

The award will be handed out at a gala dinner on May 23.
