OKLAHOMA CITY — Five umpires from the United States have been selected to represent the USA Softball umpire program internationally at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Americas Softball Olympic Qualifier, a qualifying tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  Slated for Aug. 25-Sept. 1 in Surrey, Canada, USA Softball’s Cindi Brunot (Lantana, Fla.), Christina Drumm (Oceanside, Calif.), Laura Head (Signal Hill, Calif.), Geri Magwire (Reno, Nev.), and Steve McCown (Wylie, Texas) have been selected for the WBSC Americas Softball Olympic Qualifier staff.
Brunot (USA Softball of Florida) received her WBSC certification in 2011 and has since umpired at the 2011 World Cup of Softball (now known as the USA Softball International Cup), 2012 WBSC Women’s World Championship (now known at the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup), 2017 WBSC Junior Women’s World Championship (now known at the WBSC U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup), and 2018 USA Softball International Cup.
Upon selection, Brunot said, “What a great honor to represent your country! I am so thankful and grateful to have been selected. I am looking forward to reconnecting with umpires across the globe that I have worked with at other international events, while forging new friendships with umpires I have yet to meet. I am also looking forward to traveling to another part of the world that I have yet to see!”
Drumm (USA Softball of Southern California) also joins the staff, having umpired the World Cup of Softball five times, in addition to the 2009 Chinese National Games, 2016 Japan All-Star Series and WBSC Women’s World Championship (2010, 2018). Adding to her international umpiring resume, Drumm said she was, “over the moon with pride to represent the U.S. and am at a loss for words.”
Adding to the international umpiring experience of the staff is Head (USA Softball of Southern California) who has previously umpired the Pan American Games Qualifier (2013), the World Cup of Softball twice (2015, 2016) as well as the 2015 WBSC Junior Women’s World Championship, 2016 WBSC Women’s World Championship and 2018 USA Softball International Cup. Echoing similar sentiments, Head said, “It is an honor to be part of such a prestigious event. To be part of the process of two teams qualifying for the Olympic Games is almost unfathomable. I look forward to the exciting games and representing USA Softball and USA Softball of Southern California to the best of my ability.”
Also having umpired at the World Cup of Softball is Magwire (USA Softball of Nevada) who has been to the tournament twice in addition to the Junior Women’s World Championship (2015), the Women’s World Championship (2016), and the 2017 Japan All-Star Series. Upon selection, Magwire said, “How can I describe my feelings at being selected to the Olympic Qualifier umpire staff? I’m so very humbled to be a part of such a select group of umpires! I’m truly looking forward to renewing old friendships made at past championships, making new friendships, and having the opportunity to work elite softball at the highest level. I know how much I am blessed to be part of this moment in time.”
Having traveled to work the most recent Japan All-Star Series in 2018, McCown (USA Softball of Dallas/Fort Worth) has also been selected to umpire the World Cup of Softball five times in addition to the 2016 WBSC Women’s World Championship. Appreciative of the opportunity, McCown said, “This is a culmination of years of time and effort. Not only by myself, but my family, who has supported, sacrificed and shared my ambitions. I’m looking forward to the level of competition and sharing ideas with a different level of umpires.”
Umpires are selected to represent the United States at WBSC-sanctioned events through their affiliation with USA Softball, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States.  To find out how you can become a WBSC-certified umpire, please visit
