Laurier Golden Hawks Splits Double Header with Western

October 12, 2021

Waterloo, ON - - Laurier Golden Hawks Splits Double Header with Western

The women’s softball team split a double header this past weekend against their rival Western Mustangs. This was the first meeting between the two teams since the 2019 Canadian Championships when the Golden Hawks came out on top with a 4-3 win and captured the Canadian bronze medal. These two teams have also met in four of the last six Ontario Championship gold medal contests.

The Golden Hawks got off to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Cam Schnarr led off with a triple down the left field line. Brook Tweddle then had a four pitch walk and Serenity Mclellan had a bunt single to load the bases. Emma Diegel then walked in Schnarr to open the scoring. Maddy Barry had a sacrifice fly to centre for the 2-0 lead. Western would pick away at that lead with one in the fourth and one in the fifth before opening the game up with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. They would add two more in the top of the seventh, but the Laurier offense would not go away quietly. They added two runs in the bottom of the seventh and were still threatening with runners in scoring position before Western finally worked their way out of the jam and secured the 8-4 win.

Laurier opened the scoring early in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Starting pitcher Brooke Cameron helped her own cause with an RBI double. That was followed up with another double from Schnarr for the second run of the inning. They added three more runs in the second inning when Abby Legge and Diegel reached on singles. Kelly Tikel scored Legge on a single up the middle and Cameron added her second RBI of the game with a single to left field. Laurier got some insurance runs in the top of the seventh off the bat of Tikel who had a line drive down the right field line for a triple and scored two. The purple and gold added another run and held off a late push by the Mustangs for the 8-5 win.

Laurier now stands at 5-3 on the season and will welcome the McMaster Marauders on Tuesday night at 7 and 9pm at Hillside Park in Waterloo.
