Canada Adds Two More Wins at Canada Cup

Surrey, B.C. – The Canadian Women’s National Softball Team added two more wins to its record at the Canada Cup International Softball Championship after defeating the Calahoo Erins 8-1 and the Philippines 10-1. Team Canada’s pitching and offence continues to get the job done in the tournament’s early goings.

In the afternoon game against Calahoo, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Kelsey Harshman (Delta, B.C.) led off with a single, and after a pair of fielder’s choices left two runners on base, Kianna Jones (Surrey, B.C.) lifted a three-run homerun left to get Canada on the board. The following inning, Madelyn McKinnon (Surrey, B.C.) drew a one-out walk, and courtesy runner Emma Dorval (Surrey, B.C.) advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by Harshman.

Calahoo got a homerun by Devyn Ritz to lead off the fifth, but Canada put the game away in the bottom of the sixth. Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ont.) led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an error by the shortstop before scoring on a single by Dorval. Harshman followed with a two-run blast to center, followed by a single by Erika Polidori (Brantford, Ont.) who stole second and scored on a single by Alysen Febrey (Peachtree City, Ga.) to end the game on the run rule.

Box Score: Canada 8 vs. Calahoo Erins 1

Jorde Chartrand (Weyburn, Sask.) got the start in the pitcher’s circle and earned the win, allowing only one run on three hits and she struck out seven batters over five innings. Nicola Simpson (Seattle, Wash.) pitched a scoreless sixth. Harshman led Canada at the plate once again going 3-for-3 with a homerun, two singles and three runs batted in, with Jones adding a three-run blast. Leung singled twice, with Polidori, Febrey and Dorval each contributing a single.

Canada’s bats kept rolling early in the evening game against the Philippines, putting up six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Polidori led off with a single, stole second and immediately scored on a single by Febrey. A walk and a single by Kelsey Lalor (Red Deer, Alta.) loaded the bases before Emma Entzminger (Victoria, B.C.) singled to center to drive in one run followed by a two-run double by Grace Messmer (Surrey, B.C.). Entzminger scored on an error, followed by a sacrifice fly by Lauren Benson (Surrey, B.C.) to make the score 6-0 for Canada.

The Philippines scored one run in the top of the third, and Canada responded with four in the bottom of the inning. Entzminger and Messmer hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, with Entzminger crossing the plate on a single by Benson. After a single by Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, Ont.) loaded the bases, Febrey cleared them with a double to left.

Box Score: Canada 10 vs. Philippines 1

Sam Ryan (Monroe, N.Y.) started the game in the circle and allowed one run on five hits with one strikeout through three and two third innings of work. Simpson pitched the final inning and two thirds without allowing a run or a hit.
