How Amazon’s A League Of Their Own Reminds Us Of The Rockford Peaches

The Rockford Peaches may only have had a run of twelve years as a professional baseball team, but in that time, they made an impression on the sporting world in a significantly positive way. And, decades on, Amazon’s A League Of Their Own reminds viewers of how important the Rockford Peaches were as a sporting entity.

The Rockford Peaches, for anyone who didn’t know, were a female professional baseball team that played at the Beyer Stadium in Rockford, Illinois, and competed in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, also known as the AAGPBL. And in their twelve-year stint, they were hugely successful, winning the league title in 1945, 1948, 1949 and 1950. So, if you could place baseball bets online back then, the Rockford Peaches would have been the team to wager on.

The story of the Rockford Peaches was also going to be one that would be told time and time again over the years, and in many ways, it deserved to be immortalised in some way, shape or form. And in 1992, this happened in its first instance, when a League of Their Own movie, starring the likes of Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O’Donnell, hit screens. It detailed the Rockford Peaches story immaculately and re-told it in a way that was sure to see everyone take the team and their achievements to heart.

And now, Amazon customers can relive the story of the Rockford Peaches in an eight-part TV show on the platform. But, instead of taking the 1992 movie and delivering a remake, it’s fair to say that the story has been reimagined by Amazon, with there being attempts to detail stories and anecdotes that may have been missing from the film, particularly surrounding the AAGPBL itself.

But, as you will expect, you can’t get away from the sporting achievements of the Rockford Peaches and how successful they were between the years of 1943, when they formed, and 1954, when the league disbanded, and therefore, the Rockford Peaches were no more after that date.

And, being able to relive the story from start to finish by watching A League of Their Own on Amazon only serves to highlight the achievements of players such as Dorothy Kamenshek, Lois Florreich, Dorothy Harrell, Carolyn Morris, Alice Pollitt, Ruth Richard, Rose Gacioch, Eleanor Callow and Joan Berger.

It’s also an opportunity to explore the intricacies of the league, the controversies and the relationships between the players on the team too, which is a reason why A League of Their Own has proved incredibly popular with the people of today, bearing in mind that the story of the Rockford Peaches is decades old and harks back to the 1940s. So, you could say the eight-part TV series doesn’t only remind us of the Rockford Peaches, but the era, the sporting achievements, and everything that went with it.
