VIII Junior Men’s World Championships Schedule Announced
(Ottawa,ON) – The International Softball Federation (ISF) officially released theschedule for the ISF Junior Men’s World Softball Championships today. Canadawill be hosting the event, which will be held from June 20th-29th2008 at the Pepsi Softball Centre in Whitehorse, Yukon.
Twelve(12) countries will be represented at the event, including three-time defendingchampion Australia, as well as Argentina, Botswana, Canada, Czech Republic,Denmark, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States andVenezuela. Each team will feature the very best male players aged 19 and underfrom their respective countries.
Canadapreviously earned bronze medals at the World Championships in 2005 inSummerside, PEI, in 2001 in Sydney, Australia and in 1997 in St. John’s,Newfoundland. Their last Gold Medal came in 1993, when they defeated hostcountry New Zealand in the Grand Final.
“OurJunior Men's National Team is presently engaged in off-season trainingplans in both physical and mental domains” noted Tom Doucette, head coach ofthe Canadian Junior Men’s National team. “We are down to a selection pool oftwenty-six athletes with the final Selection Camp being set for May 11th-15th, 2008. The task of final selection will be very difficult,which is a testimony to the high quality of skill sets that exists withinthe Selection Pool.”
Eachof the twelve teams will face each other in round robin play, which will beplayed from June 20th to 27th, 2008. The top fourcountries will advance to the page playoff on June 28th, as thethird and fourth place teams will square off, immediately followed by a secondplayoff game between the two top teams. The winner of the latter will earn adirect berth to the Grand Final, while the losing team will meet the winner ofthe first playoff game to determine who will move on to the Grand Final.
Thetournament’s first game will feature the defending champions from Australiataking on Botswana (June 20th, 12:00pm PDT), who will be makingtheir first ever appearance at the Junior Men’s World Championships. Canadawill play its opening game against the Czech Republic later that night (7:00pm,PDT).
“Ifpast World Championships are indicators of what will occur in Whitehorse, thefans will certainly be in for a softball treat” added Doucette. “There areso many countries that have high end programs that the week should havesome epic confrontations.”

Horairedu Championnat du monde junior masculin VIII Annoncé
(Ottawa,ON) – La Fédération Internationale de Softball (ISF) a officiellement annoncél’horaire pour le Championnat du monde junior masculin de softball ISFaujourd’hui. Le Canada sera le pays hôte de l’événement, qui aura lieu du 20 au29 juin, 2008 au Centre de Softball Pepsi à Whitehorse, au Yukon.
Douze(12) pays seront représentés au tournoi, incluant les champions en titres àtrois reprises de l’Australie, ainsi que l’Argentine, le Botswana, le Canada,la République Tchèque, le Danemark, le Japon, le Mexique, la Nouvelle-Zélande,l’Afrique du Sud, les États-Unis et le Venezuela. Chaque équipe mettra envedette ses meilleurs athlètes de softball masculin âgés de 19 ans et moins.
LeCanada s’est mérité des médailles de bronze au Championnat du monde précédenten 2005 à Summerside, I-P-E, en 2001 à Sydney, en Australie et en 1997 à St.John’s, Terre-Neuve. Leur dernière médaille d’or est venue en 1993 lorsqu’ilsont remporté la grande finale face à l’équipe hôte de la Nouvelle-Zélande.
« Notreéquipe junior masculine est présentement engagé dans des programmesd’entraînement autant au niveau physique qu’au niveau mental » a signaléTom Doucette, entraîneur chef de la formation canadienne. « Notre bassinde sélection est présentement à vingt-six athlètes, alors que notre derniercamp de sélection aura lieu du 11 au 15 mai, 2008. La tâche de sélection finalesera très difficile, ce qui est un testament de la haute qualité des habiletésdes athlètes dans notre bassin. »
Chacunedes douze équipes se joueront entre elles en ronde préliminaire, qui se joueradu 20 au 27 juin, 2008. Les quatre meilleures formations avanceront à la rondeéliminatoire qui sera présenté le 28 juin, alors que l’équipe de troisièmeplace affrontera celle de quatrième place, immédiatement suivi d’une partieentre les équipes de première et deuxième place. L’équipe gagnante de cettedeuxième partie se méritera directement une place en grande finale, alors quel’équipe perdante affrontera le gagnant de la première partie éliminatoire pourdéterminer qui avancera à la grande finale.
Lapremière partie du tournoi mettra en vedette les champions en titre del’Australie contre le Botswana (20 juin, 12:00 HAP), qui feront leur toutepremière participation au Championnat du monde junior masculin. Le Canadajouera sa première partie contre la République Tchèque plus tard en soirée(19:00 HAP).
« Siles Championnats du monde précédents peuvent expliquer ce qui se passera àWhitehorse, les spectateurs seront certainement traités à de l’excellentecompétition de softball » a ajouté Doucette. « Il y a plusieurs pays quiont des programmes de haute qualité, donc la semaine devrait avoir plusieursrencontres spectaculaires. »
