MARINER’S VICTORS AT SOUTH BRISBANE CLUB CLASSIC

The Western Australian based Southside Mariners took out their second successive South Brisbane Club Classic tournament this Queen’s Birthday long weekend defeating the Brisbane Giants 2-0 in a fiercely competitive grand final spectacle of men’s fastpitch softball action.

The Southside Mariners went through the rounds undefeated to qualify in first position to go straight through to the finals. The Brisbane Giants had previously defeated the Victoria Point Sharks in what would turn out to be the game of the tournament in the semi-final, sneaking in an unanswered run in the top of the ninth innings tie breaker to win 1-0 and go through to have a shot at Club Classic success.

The Mariners, with in form pickups Zenon Winters (from Murarrie) and Adam Folkard (ACT), had dealt with the wet conditions all weekend and went on to blitz the Giants in what would be a pitcher dominated grand final. Folkard threw 18 strikeouts for the grand final and was backed up well by Adam Humble through-out the tournament.

Redlands teams Scorpions and Raiders had lacked the consistency required over the weekend to secure a finals birth. As did TAN, Bruins and Sydney United who all yielded quality line-ups- testament to the strength of this year’s Club Classic.

The weekend was a great display of softball talent and was the final tournament for the Australian players to hone their skills in preparation for the International Softball Federation World Series that will be held in Saskatoon, Canada in July 2009.

An impressive 14 of the 17 Australian players as well as officials were involved in this years Club Classic tournament helping make it such a success. They will be seeking to improve on the bronze medal that the Australian Steelers achieved at the 2004 World Series.

Individual stand-outs for the weekend included Best Batter and MVP- Aaron Cockman (Mariners), Best Pitcher- Adam Humble (Mariners), Best Fielder- Mike Harrow (Scorpions), and the Ewan O’Brien Memorial Trophy (Rising Star Award) - Tyson Burns (Giants).

The All Star Team named for the series consisted of Pitcher – Adam Humble (Mariners), Catcher – Mike Harrow (Scorpions), 1st Base – Michael Tanner (Sydney United), 2nd Base – Zenon Winters (Mariners), 3rd Base – Aaron Cockman (Mariners), Short Stop – Nic Norton (Sydney United), Left Field – Patrick Morgan (Giants), Centre Field – Shaun Goffer (Raiders), Right Field – Josh Davison (Sharks), Utility – Thomas Cameron (Bruins) and Coach – Shane Hughes (Mariners).
