U19International Men’s Softball Championship Set to Kick-Off Next Week!

(Charlottetown,PEI) – After a few years of planning, the U19 International Men’s SoftballChampionship will kick-off on Tuesday, July 7th with a game betweenManitoba and New Brunswick (9:00am ADT) at Central Fields in Charlottetown,PEI. 2009 will mark the first year of this tournament, which will showcase thevery best young male softball players from 11 Provincial and Territorial teams,as well as two international teams, including one entry from New Zealand andanother from the United States. The Canadian teams include British Columbia,Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia,Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Northwest Territories.

Asmen’s softball was removed as a competition sport in the 2009 Canada Gamesprogram, Softball Canada decided to create a new event that would replace theCanada Games competition experience for male provincial/ territorial teams.“It’s usually one of the biggest spectator sports for the Games,” said KevinQuinn, President of Softball Canada. “We need this type of competition toattract the under-19 athletes to continue to participate in the sport.”

Withthe added international flavour, the Canadian players will have the opportunityto face some of the best players in the world, while the fans will be treatedto a very high caliber of softball. New Zealand is one of the top men’ssoftball nations in the world, while the United States is always a toughopponent.

Theround-robin portion of the tournament will be split into two pools, one withsix teams and the other with seven. Each team will play opponents within their ownpool. At the end of the round-robin, the top four teams from each pool willmove on to the playoff round.
