Ontariowins Gold at U19 International Men’s Softball Championship
 
(Charlottetown,PEI) – Ontario defeated Saskatchewan twice on the final day of competition asthey claimed the Gold medal of the U19 International Men’s SoftballChampionship. After beating Saskatchewan 3-2 this morning to earn a directberth in the Championship game, Ontario repeated that feat again with a 5-1 winto take the Gold.
 
Saskatchewan2, Ontario 3
Witha direct berth to the Championship game on the line, Ontario jumped to a 3-0lead before Saskatchewan scored two runs in the bottom of the third to cut thelead to one, but Ontario pitcher Brendan Roach shut the door in the final threeinnings, allowing only three hits with five strikeouts. Dan Mitchell and RobertKay each had a hit and a run batted in for Ontario, who only managed five hitsoff Saskatchewan pitcher Devon McCullough. Kalyn Robinson paced Saskatchewan atthe plate with three hits and an RBI. McCullough took the complete-game loss,allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
 
NovaScotia 9, New Zealand 4
NovaScotia woke up late in the game to power past New Zealand, eliminating thekiwis from the tournament. After New Zealand took a quick 2-0 lead in thebottom of the first, Nova Scotia scored two runs in each of the third andfourth innings, added one run in the fifth and sixth, and rounded out theirscoring with three runs in the seventh to preserve the win. Aaron Long was thebig contributor for NS, going four-for-four with four runs batted in and tworuns scored. Patrick Avery also contributed with two hits, an RBI and a runscored, while Darcy and Ryan Gillis, and Tyler Whynot each added a hit. JoshGettins went three-for-four with an RBI and two runs for NZ, while JoshuaHarrow added two hits and three runs batted in. Patrick Avery earned the win inthe pitcher’s circle, allowing four runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
 
NovaScotia 2, Saskatchewan 8
Saskatchewanearned a rematch with Ontario in the Championship game by defeating NovaScotia. Saskatchewan jumped to an early 4-0 lead, and after Nova Scotia cameback with two runs, they scored a run in the fourth and three in the fifth tocap off the scoring. Devon McCullough shut the NS offence down in the threefinal innings, allowing only one hit while he picked up five strikeouts. KalynRobinson was three-for-three with a run batted in and two runs scored forSaskatchewan, while McCullough, Derek Arsenie, Matt Karpinka and Kyle Laird alldrove in a run. Trent MacDonald and Tyler Whynot each went two-for-two for NovaScotia, while Ryan Gillis added a hit and an RBI.
 
Saskatchewan1, Ontario 5
Ontarioclaimed the Gold medal by scoring two runs in the first and adding single runs inthe third, fourth and fifth innings to defeat Saskatchewan, who were playingtheir third game of the day. Brendan Roach earned the complete-game win forOntario, allowing only one run on six hits to go along with three strikeouts.Devon McCullough, pitching in his third game of the day, was tagged with thecomplete-game loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts aswell. Ian Wallwork had a hit and two runs batted in for Ontario, while DanMitchell, Robert Kay, and Adam Alexander each added a hit and an RBI. KalynRobinson had two hits for Saskatchewan.
