Mark Smith will stay on as Senior Women’s National Softball Team Head Coach
(Ottawa,ON) – Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Senior Women’s National TeamHead Coach Mark Smith’s (Falmouth, NS) contract with the team has been extendedfor two years, until the end of the 2011 Pan American Games. In 2009, Smith coached both the Senior Men’s and Women’s National Teams, leading the Men’steam to a Bronze medal at the ISF Men’s World Championship. He also led the Women’s team to a Bronze medal at the KFC World Cup of Softball and Silver medals at both the Canada Cup and the Pan American Championship.
Smith coached the Senior Men’s National Team from 2001 to 2009, and led the team to a Pan American Games Gold medal in 2003, an ISF World Championship Silver medal in 2004 and an ISF World Championship Bronze medal in 2009. He will be stepping aside from that position and a new Head Coach will be put in place for 2010.
“I am excited about this new opportunity and anxious to get started” stated MarkSmith. “Our women’s program has demonstrated we are among the top softballprograms in the world. 2010 is an important year as we prepare for theWorld Championships and I am looking forward to this challenge.”
The Senior Women’s National Team will have an important season in 2010, as they will be in the hunt for their first ISF Women’s World Championship medal since1978 (Silver). At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the team narrowly missed an opportunity to bring home a medal with the youngest team at the event, and is considered a medal threat for the ISF World Championship, which will be held in Oklahoma City, OK from July 16-26, 2010. Team Canada will also participatein the 17th Annual Canada Cup, which will take place from July 3-11, 2010.
