MIDLAND, MI – In the late 1990s the USA Softball Junior Men’s National Team held a team camp in Corona, Calif, so I loaded up my camera equipment and headed on over. That’s where I met a talented young, teenage pitcher and versatile ball player by the name of Tyron McKinney.

Now, nearly 20 years later, he has fashioned himself a solid fastpitch career at the top of the sport: playing in the ISC World Tournament numerous times, and in several Amateur Softball Association (ASA) national tournaments.

He’s playing in the 46-team 2012 World Tournament with Stock Pack of Ashland, Ohio. Today against the No. 1 ISC ranked New York Gremlins, McKinney – playing third base – laced a solid single into right field off Andrew Kirkpatrick, one of the world’s top fastpitch hurlers.

Tyron is one of many players whose careers started in youth leagues and advanced to the higher levels. He eventually reached his dream when he was named to the USA Men’s National team in 2009.
