Toronto Gators upend Eugene (OR) California A’s on big hits and Justin Schofield pitching

Justin Schofield, age 20 at the time and pitching in California in 2010, threw a fine game in beating the Eugene (OR) California A’s, 2-0, in the losers bracket of the ISC World Tournament.

MIDLAND, MI – The Toronto Gators only got two hits, but they were huge as Greg Garrity and John Kemp hit solo home runs and the Gators upended the Eugene (OR) California A’s 2-0, Friday, in a losers’ bracket game.

The win exits the ISC No. 6 ranked A’s from the ISC World Tournament, and sends the Gators on to a matchup with the Jarvis Ontario Travelers Friday afternoon.
Toronto right-hander, Justin Schofield, survived some tense moments as he wiggled out of trouble, stranding 12 A’s runners. But when he had to throw quality pitches, he did. No more critical than in the bottom of the seventh with the A’s having one more shot at pulling out the win over the upstart Gators.

The A’s put runners on first and second on walks to Derek Mason and Nate Devine. But with two outs, Schofield struck out Marcus Tan to end the game.
Schofield, just 21-years-old, struck out 10, walked three and hit two batters to pick up his third tournament win and improve his record to 3-1.
Garrity’s homer to right-centerfield in the first inning put Toronto on the board, and Kemp followed suite in the fourth to what turned out to be all the runs the Gators would need.

The No. 19 Gators (4-1) can finish no worse than sixth in the 46-team world tournament. And they’ve rung up some impressive wins along the way.
Toronto opened with a 1-0 win over the No. 5 Circle Tap Dukes (WI); beat the top-20 ranked Seattle Cal-State Builders, 6-0; then lost to No. 4 PA Power, 3-0; survived a 12-9 slugfest over the Niagra Snappers, and won possibly the biggest game of their season by knocking off the No. 6 A’s.
