Durham’s winning streak ends at 29 games

OCAA Women’s Fastball

Durham defeated Humber 8-3

Humber defeated Durham 17-9

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women’s fastball team’s 29 game winning streak came to an end on Thursday night as they were defeated in the second half of their doubleheader against Humber College.

After winning game one by a score of 8-3, Humber shocked the Lords with a 17-9 upset in game two.

Durham’s last loss against an OCAA opponent came in the 2009 gold medal game against the St. Clair Saints. The Lords were 29-0 since that loss after having two perfect regular seasons and winning back-to-back provincial titles in 2010 and 2011.

The Lords started off the night with an 8-3 win over Humber, as veteran pitcher Kayla MacLean allowed three earned runs off of eight hits in the complete game victory. The Whitby native had nine K’s on the night.

Shannon Ferguson, Lydia Kalbfleisch, Jessica Pike and Melissa Semeniuk all had two hits in the game, while Kalbfleisch and Semeniuk combined to score five of the eight Durham runs.

The Lords looked as if they were going to cruise to a game two victory as they led 4-1 heading into the fifth inning. That is when the Humber bats came alive and the Durham defence fell asleep as the Hawks went on to score 12 runs in the top half of the inning. It was the most runs allowed by Durham in any game this season.

Durham managed to cut the deficit to just four runs, but Humber tacked on four more in the seventh inning to snap the Lords winning streak.

Samantha Officer and Semeniuk each had two hits and two RBI’s in the losing effort. Kelsey Brady went 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI’s and two runs scored for Humber.

Durham will look to start another streak on Sunday afternoon as they head to Kitchener for a single game against Conestoga College at noon.

The Lords next home action is on October 3rd against Conestoga. First pitch for the doubleheader is at 6 p.m.
