Canada Improves to 4-0 with Pair of Wins at ISF Junior Women’s World Championship

(Brampton, ON) The Canadian Junior Women’s National improved its record to 4-0 with a pair of wins at the ISF Junior Women’s World Championship in Brampton, defeating the Czech Republic 5-1 and Korea 11-1 in six innings. In the win against the Czech Republic, pitcher Madison Schreyer (Winnipeg, MB) had a perfect game through six innings before the leadoff hitter singled in the top of the seventh and scored on a triple, while Janet Leung (Mississauga, ON) hammered a three-run homerun to put the game out of reach against Korea.

Team Canada did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard in the first game against the Czech Republic, as Aspen Searle (Brantford, ON) led off the bottom of the first with a single through the left side of the infield, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double by Chelsea Jenner (Abbotsford, BC). Leung led off the bottom of the second with a single, but was thrown out trying to steal second base.

Schreyer struck out the side in the top of the third, and Searle hit a one-out single but Canada was not able to get anything going in the bottom of the frame. The following inning, Sara Groenewegen (Surrey, BC) lined a pitch over the left field fence for a leadoff homerun, giving Canada a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Chelsea Strandlund (Victoria, BC) reached on an error and advanced to third on a double by Searle, but was tagged out on a ground ball to third base. Jenner then hit her second double of the game to score Searle as Canada added a run to its lead. The following inning, Miranda Castiglione (Brampton, ON) hit a one-out double and scored on a triple by Strandlund, who would go on to score on a single by Tori Charters (Winnipeg, MB) as Canada took a 5-0 lead.

Carrying a perfect game through six complete innings, Schreyer allowed a base hit just past the infield to lead off the top of the seventh, and after a pair of fly outs, the following batter tripled to the left field corner. Schreyer induced a ground out to second base to end the game.

Schreyer allowed one run on two hits and struck out eight batters in the complete game win. Searle had a double and three singles, while Jenner contributed two doubles. Groenewegen added a solo homerun, with other hits going to Charters, Castiglione, Leung and Strandlund.

In the second game, Canada jumped out to another early lead as Charters slapped a single up the middle, Jenner lined a pitch to centerfield for a single, and both runners advanced on a groundout. Castiglione then hit a ground ball passed the second baseman to bring both runners in to score. Canadian pitcher Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC) struck out the side in the bottom of the first.

Strandlund notched a two-out single in the top of the second, but was called out for leaving the base early on a stolen base attempt. The following inning, Searle led off with a drag bunt single and Charters reached after being hit by a pitch. The runners were sacrificed to second and third before they both crossed the plate after a single by Groenewegen, giving Canada a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Korea loaded the bases with one out on two walks and a hit by pitch, and managed to score a run on a sacrifice fly to left field. However, Cater struck out the next batter to leave two runners on base.

The red and white got that run right back in the top of the fourth, as Riley Carter (Uxbridge, ON) hit a fly ball to right field that hit the right fielder’s glove and rolled away, allowing Carter to race around to third base. She later scored when the first baseman made an error on a ground ball. Canada added another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple by Carter.

Canada put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth. After the two first batters were quickly retired, Jenner tripled to right field and scored on a single by Groenewegen. Castiglione then singled, followed by a three-run homerun over the centerfield fence by Leung. Pinch hitter Jordan Beck (Vancouver, BC) doubled and was replaced by Emma Entzminger (Victoria, BC) on the base paths, who immediately scored on a ground-rule double by Carter. Groenewegen pitched the sixth inning and struck out two batters to end the game on the run rule.

Cater earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing one run on no hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts, while Groenewegen struck out two in one inning of relief. Six Canadian hitters notched two hits, including Leung, Charters, Jenner, Groenewegen, Castiglione and Carter. Other hits went to Searle, Beck and Strandlund to round out Canada’s 15 hits.
