U21 Men’s International Softball Championship
Day 1 Results
(Saskatoon, SK) The U21 Men’s International Softball Championship began in Saskatoon, SK on Tuesday with all 12 teams in action.
Ontario 11 vs. Alberta 1
In the opening game of the tournament, Ontario scored in each of the game’s six innings to defeat Alberta 11-1. Ty Sebastian led the way for Team Ontario by going three-for-four with a homerun and four runs batted in, while Cole Bolton had a triple and two singles and Cody Skelton delivered a pair of doubles. Justin Gainey had two of Alberta’s four hits and drove in the only run. Michael Lagace-Roote earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts in five innings pitched.
ISA New Zealand 16 vs. Manitoba 1
ISA New Zealand showed the power of their offence, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a commanding lead and cruised to the 16-1 win. Tane Tuhakaraina drove in four runs for the Kiwis with a homerun and a double, while Bradley Bennett had a homerun, three walks and scored three times. Five New Zealand hitters had multi-hit games and the team combined for nine extra-base hits. Devon Garson had an RBI single for the young Manitoba team. Jackson Prime earned the win for New Zealand, allowing a run on two hits with six strikeouts in three innings pitched.
Argentina 14 vs. British Columbia 3
The Argentina U18 National Team broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the third to earn the 14-3 win, powered by five homeruns. Huemul Mata Carabajal drove in four runs, including a three-run homerun, while Teo Migliavacca had a homerun, three singles and scored three times. Gonzalo Masmu also connected with a three-run homerun for the Argentineans. Team BC scored single runs in each of the second, third and fifth innings, as Michael Turner went two-for-two and Brad Robinson drove in two runs.
Northwest Territories 5 vs. Quebec 3
Team NWT opened the tournament with a win by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning for the come-from-behind victory over Quebec. Quebec took a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first and second innings and retook the lead in the bottom of the third after the Northwest Territories had tied the game, but Kynan Tarnowski held them hitless over the last three innings to set the stage for the NWT win. Quebec showcased their speed three extra-base hits and three stolen bases, but Team NWT capitalized on a game-winning two-run double by Luke White in the sixth to register the win. Dylan Klassen chipped in with a two-run single and a double for NWT, while Alexandre Labbe had an RBI double for Quebec.
Nova Scotia 9 vs. New Brunswick 8
Nova Scotia registered a big comeback win, falling behind 7-0 before coming all the way back for the 9-8 victory. New Brunswick got on the board early with an RBI single by Brett Young and a two-run homerun by Devon McKenzie in the top of the first, and added four more in the fourth on a pair of two-run shots by Braden Scott and Ransen Harris. However, Nova Scotia responded with three runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by Sean Croft who later scored on a wild pitch, and three more in the fourth on another two-run single by Croft and an RBI single by Tyler MacIsaac. MacIsaac later hit the game-winning solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth after Nova Scotia had tied the game with two runs in the fifth.
Alberta 11 vs. Manitoba 2
After a tough loss to Ontario earlier in the day, Team Alberta scored seven runs in the top of the sixth to even its record at 1-1. Alberta jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first and added a fourth run in the second, but Manitoba responded with two runs in the fourth to cut the lead in half. However, Alberta put up seven runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Taylor Schubada and a three-run shot by Brett Larson. Chance Lund also had a two-run homerun earlier in the game for Alberta. Eddy Stevenson registered two hits for Manitoba, while Joey Sutherland had a two-run single.
Saskatchewan 4 vs. Newfoundland and Labrador 1
The host team from Saskatchewan took a 2-0 lead and added two more runs in the seventh to earn a hard-fought 4-1 win over Newfoundland and Labrador. Logan Frohaug limited Newfoundland and Labrador to only one run on five hits with five strikeouts in the complete game win, while the Saskatchewan offence collected nine hits. Joel Hamilton, Brayden Knackstedt and Aidan Patrick each drove in a run for Saskatchewan, with the fourth run coming on a wild pitch. Jeremy O’Rielly had a pair of singles and an RBI for Newfoundland and Labrador, while Colin Walsh took the loss in the pitcher’s circle.
Ontario 12 vs. Nova Scotia 2
Ontario improved their tournament record to 2-0 by scoring 12 runs on 13 hits to defeat Nova Scotia. Adam Stuck had a three-run homerun, while Austin Brown, Ty Sebastian and Travis Jones each added one as the top of the lineup led Ontario to the big win. Nova Scotia produced four hits off Ontario pitcher George Armstrong, scoring both of their runs in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Alex Anthony.
