U21 Men’s International Softball Championship
Day 2 Results
(Saskatoon, SK) The U21 Men’s International Softball Championship is currently underway in Saskatoon, SK, with seven games being played on Wednesday.
British Columbia 5 vs. Northwest Territories 4
In the first game of the day, the Northwest Territories scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh to send the game to extra innings, but Michael Turner hit a walk off two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth to lead British Columbia to the win. BC pitcher Ryan Banner held NWT to two earned runs on five hits in eight innings, firing 15 strikeouts for the complete game win. Brad Peck had a double, a single and a run batted in for BC, with Brad Robinson and Ryan Shields each adding RBI singles. Luke White drove in two runs for NWT, with Tyler Postill and Kirk Sangris chipping in with RBI singles.
Alberta 9 vs. New Brunswick 2
Josh Sevcik limited New Brunswick to two runs on three hits in five innings, and Taylor Schubada and Brandon Powlik each had a homerun and two runs batted in as Alberta earned their second win of the tournament. New Brunswick scored a run in the bottom of the third on a fielder’s choice to cut the lead to 2-1, but Alberta responded with three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth for the run rule win. Chance Lund also drove in two runs for Alberta, while John Cortes had a pair of hits including a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth for New Brunswick.
Nova Scotia 6 vs. Manitoba 0
Cody Anthony fired a one-hitter and struck out 11 to lead Nova Scotia to the shutout win. Manitoba Kenly Monias held his team in the game until Tyler MacIsaac hit a two-out bases loaded triple in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Sean Croft went two-for-two with a walk and a run scored for Nova Scotia, while Dennis Stevenson was the only Manitoba player to register a hit.
Newfoundland & Labrador 9 vs. Quebec 0
Newfoundland and Labrador scored five runs in the third and added four more in the fourth, while Mark Power limited Quebec to three hits over four innings to earn the win. Eddie Hefferan hit a leadoff triple and scored on an error to start the third, while Newfoundland and Labrador also got an RBI single by Jeremy O’Rielly, an RBI double by Power and a two-run single by Johnny Doyle. They then strung together a single, a double and two triples to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth to round out the scoring. François-Charles René, Alexandre Labbé, Alexandre Lemieux and Anthony Lapierre each registered a hit for Quebec.
Argentina 9 vs. Northwest Territories 0
The Argentinean pitching duo of Huemel Mata Carabajal and Julian Fernandez combined to throw a five inning no-hitter against Team NWT, striking out nine batters. NWT starting pitcher Lyndon Antoine held Argentina’s bat in check until they exploded for six runs in the top of the third on a pair of errors, a two-run double by Mata Carabajal and an RBI triple by Gaston Suarez. Argentina went on to add three runs in the fourth, as Teo Migliavacca drove in a run on a triple, scored on a double by Roman Godoy Herbel who then scored on a triple by Mata Carabajal.
Saskatchewan 4 vs. British Columbia 1
Saskatchewan earned their second win in another tight ball game. Justice Keshane limited BC to a run on five hits with 12 strikeouts to earn the complete game win, while Brandon Dauvin broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth to give Saskatchewan the win. Saskatchewan opened the scoring with a run on an error in the second before BC tied the game on a leadoff homerun by Micheal Turner. Anthony Climenhaga added an RBI single for Saskatchewan.
Ontario 13 vs. New Zealand 10
In an early tournament offensive showdown, Ontario jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first and was able to hold on for the 13-10 win over ISA New Zealand. Ty Sebastian opened the scoring with a three-run homerun, and Ontario took advantage of two errors and a few wild pitches to score six runs in the top of the first. New Zealand got two runs back on a wild pitch and an RBI triple by Curtis Huata, and scored three more in the fourth on an RBI single by Taylor Hick and a two-run error. However, Ontario scored three of their own in the top of the fifth on a three-run error by the centerfielder and tacked on three more in the sixth on a homerun by Cole Bolton. Down 13-5, New Zealand put up five runs in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a two-run single by Jackson Prime and a two-run homerun by Huata, but could not score any runs in the seventh.
