(Sherbrooke, QC) Manitoba (6-0) continued to roll as the only remaining unbeaten team while British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec kept pace by each winning a pair of games to move to 5-1 on the third day of competition at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, QC.
 
Alberta 7 vs. Newfoundland & Labrador 0
 
Alberta started the day with a win as Kami Merrill (Calgary, AB) and Madison Clarke (Edmonton, AB) combined for a no-hitter while Nicole Robertson (Calgary, AB) provided much of the offence by going four-for-four with a homerun, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Merrill fired 10 strikeouts in five innings of work and added a single and drove in two runs, while Jocelyn Peterman (Red Deer, AB) chipped in with two singles and an RBI.
 
Manitoba 8 vs. Saskatchewan 6
 
In a very good ball game, Manitoba scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 8-6 win over Saskatchewan. Manitoba got on the board early by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on an error and an RBI single by Brigitte Gauvin (Winnipeg, MB). Saskatchewan cut the lead to 2-1 on an RBI single by Kelsey Teneycke (Watrous, SK) the next inning, and added three more in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. However, Manitoba had their big inning in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by triples by Jade Anderson (Winnipeg, MB), Courtney Kwasnitza (Stonewall, MB) and Brittany Hince Siwicki (Winnipeg, MB) as well as a two-run double by Hailey Unger (Winnipeg, MB) and a one-run double by Taylor Studler (Grosse Isle, MB). Saskatchewan scored two runs on a single by Regan Rucks in the seventh and put runners on second and third, but the last batter grounded out to third base to end the game.
 
Ontario 13 vs. Nova Scotia 2
 
Ontario’s bats stayed hot as six players registered multi-hit games and they took advantage of five errors to defeat Nova Scotia 13-2 in five innings on the run rule. Ontario jumped ahead with four runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by Logan White (Brantford, ON) and Jenna Lehoux (Mississauga, ON) as well as a two-run double by Lindsay Hayward (Ancaster, ON). They added five runs to their lead the following inning highlighted by a two-run single by Hayward, and three more in the third to take a 12-0 lead. Nova Scotia scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fourth on a triple by Angela Moores (Dartmouth, NS).
 
Prince Edward Island 6 vs. New Brunswick 4
 
Prince Edward Island jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and hung on for their second win of the tournament by defeating New Brunswick 6-4. New Brunswick opened the scoring with a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first, but PEI scored two runs on a double by Laura Bradley in the bottom of the inning. In the second, Prince Edward Island sent nine batters to the plate to score four runs, including an RBI single by Jessica Campbell and a two-run single by Bradley. New Brunswick scored a run on an error in the sixth and two more on a double by Erin Freeze (Saint John, NB) in the seventh, but that was as close as they would get.
 
British Columbia 16 vs. Newfoundland & Labrador 1
 
British Columbia scored five runs in the second and 11 in the third for the 16-1 win in three innings against Newfoundland and Labrador. Lindsey Ogilvie (Surrey, BC) had three hits for BC while Olivia Hornstein (Surrey, BC) had a triple, a single and three runs batted in and three other batters connected with two hits. Newfoundland scored a run in the top of the first and retired BC in order in the bottom of the frame, but BC took advantage of two errors to score five runs in the bottom of the second. The following inning, the first nine batters reached base to score six runs before the first out, and after a hit by pitch loaded the bases followed by a walk to bring in a run, Yasmin Bains (Richmond, BC) hit a two-run double and later scored on an error. Jennine Walsh (Langley, BC) earned the win in the pitcher’s circle for BC, allowing one unearned run on two hits in three innings.
 
Quebec 5 vs. Saskatchewan 3
 
Quebec scored five runs in the bottom of the second and survived a late inning rally by Saskatchewan for the 5-3 win. After a quick first inning, Caroline Champoux (Terrebonne, QC) opened the scoring with an RBI double and Catherine Paquette (Mascouche, QC) and Rochelle Flanagan (Beaconsfield, QC) both hit two-run singles. Cassidy Ball (Saskatoon, SK) drove in two runs with a double in the sixth for Saskatchewan and they added another in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly, but were unable to get any closer. Champoux earned the complete game win, allowing three runs – two earned – on five hits with nine strikeouts.
 
Ontario 6 vs. Alberta 0
 
Ontario scored five runs in the top of the first inning and that was all the offence they needed as the pitching duo of Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, ON) and Alex Sagl (Burlington, ON) held Alberta to only three hits as Ontario improved its record to 5-1. Miranda Castiglione (Brampton, ON) got the ball rolling with a two-run triple and scored on a groundout, and Riley Carter (Uxbridge, ON) and McLaughlin later hit back-to-back RBI single to give Ontario an early 5-0 lead. Ontario added another run on an error in the top of the fourth to complete the scoring. Taylor McGonigal (Calgary, AB) had two of Alberta’s three hits.
 
Manitoba 14 vs. New Brunswick 2
 
Manitoba improved its first-place record to 6-0 by defeating New Brunswick 14-2 in five innings on the run rule. Leadoff batter Stefanie Sheard (Winnipeg, MB) led the offence with a homerun, two doubles, three runs batted in and three runs scored while Danielle Klassen (Niverville, MB) went three-for-three and scored three runs. Mia Gautron (Winnipeg, MB) also went deep for Manitoba. Regan Lawrence (Stonewall, MB) earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing two runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts in five innings. Katie Carr (Rusagonis, NB) had a two-run double in the fifth for New Brunswick.
 
British Columbia 10 vs. Nova Scotia 0
 
British Columbia scored runs in all five innings and Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) fired a one-hitter by striking out 10 batters as British Columbia blanked Nova Scotia 10-0. Olivia Hornstein led BC offensively with three hits and three runs scored, while Chelsea Jenner (Abbotsford, BC) had two hits and drove in three runs. Cassandra Dypchey (South Surrey, BC) added a pair of singles and two runs batted in. Carrissa Carey (Sydney Mines, NS) hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth for Nova Scotia’s only hit.
 
Quebec 8 vs. Prince Edward Island 4
 
Quebec doubled Prince Edward Island 8-4 to improve its record to 5-1 and keep pace at the top of the tournament standings. Quebec built a 4-0 lead with a run in the first, a two-run triple by Caroline Champoux and an RBI single by Josyane Marticotte (St-Eustache, QC) in the top of the third. However, Prince Edward Island put a few hits together in the bottom of the inning and scored a run on an error, another on a single by Jenna MacLellan and a third on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-3. Quebec added two runs in the fifth before PEI scored one on a double by Katelyn Keoughan in the sixth, but Quebec put the game away with two more runs in the seventh.
 
After three days of competition, the standings are beginning to take shape with Manitoba sitting at the top with a 6-0 record, followed closely by British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec at 5-1. Key matchups on Tuesday include Manitoba (6-0) taking on Alberta (3-3) at 12:00pm EDT at and Quebec (5-1) at 4:00pm EDT at Bureau Park, as well as Ontario (5-1) taking on British Columbia (5-1) at 7:00pm EDT at Desranleau Park.
