Canada Summer Games – Day 5 Results

(Sherbrooke, QC) The preliminary round of the women’s softball competition at the Canada Summer Games concluded on Wednesday with six games on the schedule. The top four teams were determined a day earlier, but playoff positioning was still at stake, including a big game between British Columbia and Quebec. At the end of the day, three teams finished in a tie for first place as Manitoba, Quebec and Ontario all finished with 8-1 records.

New Brunswick 7 vs. Newfoundland & Labrador 0

In a game that was postponed earlier in the tournament due to rain, New Brunswick scored two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth to earn its first win of the tournament against Newfoundland and Labrador. Samantha DeBortoli (Saint John, NB) fired a two-hitter, striking out 11 batters in the six inning game. Katie Carr (Rusagonis, NB) led the way at the plate with a triple, two singles and a run batted in, while Lori Graham (Grand Bay-Westfield, NB) had two hits including a solo homerun. Nathalie LeBlanc (Memramcook, NB) also chipped in with a pair of singles.

Manitoba 12 vs. Prince Edward Island 0

Manitoba bounced back from a tight 1-0 loss to Quebec on Tuesday by putting up 12 runs to defeat Prince Edward Island. The pitching duo of Brooke Seneshen (Winnipeg, MB) and Jillian Dickson (Winnipeg, MB) combined for a two-hitter, striking out 10 batters in five innings. Stefanie Sheard (Winnipeg, MB) had a homerun, a double and drove in three runs, with Makensy Payne (Winnipeg, MB) adding a triple and two RBIs and Hailey Unger (Winnipeg, MB) launched a two-run homerun.

Saskatchewan 3 vs. Nova Scotia 0

Saskatchewan scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings and pitcher Haley Volk (Saskatoon, SK) scattered six hits and struck out 15 over seven innings to defeat Nova Scotia 3-0. Alex Baylak (Regina, SK) was Saskatchewan’s most dangerous hitter, driving in two runs with a triple and a double. Kelsey Teneycke (Watrous, SK) also contributed with a pair of singles and an RBI. Kelsey Brumm (Dartmouth, NS) notched a pair of doubles in the loss for Nova Scotia.

Alberta 9 vs. New Brunswick 2

Alberta built up a 9-0 and defeated New Brunswick by a score of 9-2. Alberta pounded out 13 hits, including a double and three singles by Kadieann Tighe (Priddis, AB) and three singles by Nicole Robertson (Calgary, AB). Taylor McGonigal (Calgary, AB) and Casey-May Huff (Calgary, AB) each chipped in with a pair of hits as well. In the pitcher’s circle, Torri Kleibrink (Calgary, AB) allowed two unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.

Ontario 7 vs. Newfoundland & Labrador 0

Ontario improved their record to 8-1 with a quick 7-0 win over Newfoundland and Labrador in a game that lasted just under an hour. Stacie Cox (London, ON) and Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, ON) combined for a five inning no-hitter, striking out six batters. Offensively, Kristy Noble (Uxbridge, ON) was a homerun away from the cycle as she hit a single, double and triple, while Aspen Searle (Brantford, ON) registered a triple, a single and drove in two runs. Miranda Castiglione (Brampton, ON) also smashed a two-run homerun in the win.

Quebec 1 vs. British Columbia 0

In front of a huge crowd, the home team from Quebec won its second 1-0 game in as many days against tough opponents as they defeated British Columbia. Pitchers Caroline Champoux (Terrebonne, QC) of Quebec and Jaycee Affeldt (Maple Ridge, BC) of BC both pitched fantastic games, with the only run of the game being scored on an RBI double by Champoux in the top of the second inning. Champoux fired a three-hitter, striking out eight batters while Affeldt surrendered four hits with six strikeouts. Christina Latreille (Coteau-du-Lac, QC) had a pair of hits for Quebec with Rochelle Flanagan (Beaconsfield, QC) adding a double.

With a three-way tie for first place between Manitoba, Quebec and Ontario and all three teams going 1-1 between them, Manitoba earned first place due to the fact they had the highest plus/minus between the three teams. Quebec and Ontario finished the preliminary round with the same plus/minus, with the next tie-breaker going to runs against, giving Quebec second place as they allowed the least runs. As a result, Manitoba (8-1) and Quebec (8-1) have guaranteed themselves of a medal, with the teams playing each other at 6:00pm EDT on Thursday. The other game will see Ontario (8-1) take on British Columbia (6-3) at 8:00pm EDT with the winner of that game taking on the loser of the game between Manitoba and Quebec. These two playoff games will be played at Bureau Park.

The six remaining teams will face off in a consolation round to determine the final standings, with four games being played at Desranleau Park on Thursday and the consolation final also taking place at Desranleau Park on Friday.
