Washington’s Kylee Lahners earns USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Week accolades

OKLAHOMA CITY — Three home runs and 13 RBI propelled Washington junior Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) to this week’s USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Week the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball announced today. The infielder led her team to a 5-0 record and a championship finish at the UNLV/Sportco Kick-Off Classic over the weekend. The tournament win shot Washington up from No. 5 to No. 3 in this week’s ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll. This is the first USA Softball Player of the Week award for Lahners and the first for a Husky since Kaitlin Inglesby garnered the award in week six of the 2012 season.

“It is definitely an honor to be recognized by USA Softball,” said Lahners. “It’s nice to have the weekend I did, but I was just out there playing the sport I love with my teammates, and things took care of themselves. The hard work and the focus I put in during the fall and practices and extra work paid off. I was just excited to start the season, and it’s great to start 5-0 with my teammates.”

Lahners, who entered her junior season with 21 career home runs, went yard with three-run homers in each of Washington’s first three games of the 2014 campaign. Opening the season with then-No. 16 Baylor, the California native drove in four runs to help her team to a 7-4 win. In game two of the early Washington season, Lahners picked up her second three-run homer of the year which proved to be the difference as Washington defeated San Diego 3-0.

Kylee made it a hat trick on Saturday when she belted her third three-run homer in as many games to give Washington an early 3-0 lead over Arkansas. The Pac-12 squad held on to win 6-1.

“Kylee had a great weekend for us,” said Washington Head Coach Heather Tarr. “She came up with some big hits in key moments. She has worked really hard this year, and we are excited to see her continue to make a huge impact. Around the country, there were a lot of great performances by other athletes. When your team performs well, it gives your players a chance to be recognized by USA Softball. We are grateful to be honored for our performance last weekend.”

Lahners finished the week 6-of-15 from the plate for a .400 batting average, .500 on-base percentage and 1.067 slugging percentage. She totaled four runs and 13 RBI to go along with her three home runs.

The Huskies will next compete in the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz.. February 14-16 where they’ll face No. 7 Oklahoma as well as Illinois State, San Jose State, Delaware State and Michigan State.
