Canada Improves to 2-0 with Walk-off Win over
Chinese Taipei at General Tire World Cup of Softball IX

(Irvine, California) The Canadian Senior Women’s National Team improved its record to 2-0 at the General Tire World Cup of Softball IX by defeating Chinese Taipei 3-2 on a two-out, bases-loaded walk-off single by Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON). Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) pitched five scoreless innings for Canada, but Chinese Taipei tied the game with a two-run homerun in the top of the sixth, setting the stage for Thomas’ game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh.

Chinese Taipei started the game off with a hard ground ball to shortstop for an infield single, followed by a slow bouncer that was misplayed at shortstop to put two runners on base. However, Canadian starting pitcher Jenna Caira struck out the next two batters and after the runners advanced on a pitch in the dirt, Caira induced a ground ball to first base to get out of the inning. In their own half of the inning, Canada was able to put two runners on base as well on a leadoff walk by Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) and a single by Jen Yee (North Delta, BC) later in the inning, but was unable to advance them past second base.

Caira retired the side in order in the top of the second on a ground out to second and two strikeouts, while Canada managed a two-out walk by Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) but the following batter struck out to keep the game scoreless. The following inning, Chinese Taipei got a one-out single by Meng Ting Lai and she advanced to third on a sacrifice that was dropped at first base to put runners on the corners, but the runner on third was picked off and a groundout put an end to the threat. In the bottom of the frame, Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, BC) hit a one-out double to left field and scored on a single by Yee to open the scoring.

Chinese Taipei was unable to get anything going in the top of the fourth and went down in order, while Canada got a leadoff walk by Sara Hopwood (Richmond, BC) but she was quickly doubled off on a lineout to shortstop and the next batter popped out. Caira sat the Taipei hitters in order again in the fifth before Franklin dropped a slap over third base and scored on a double to the right-center field gap by Yee to increase Canada’s lead to 2-0.

In the top of the sixth, Lai hit a leadoff double for Chinese Taipei off relief pitcher Sara Plourde (Fredericton, NB) and after a groundout, Hui Wen Huang launched a two-run homerun over the centerfield wall to tie the game at 2-2. Plourde settled down and struck out the next batter and induced a pop out to first base in foul territory for the third out. In the bottom of the inning, Polidori drew another two-out walk but did not get any further.

Plourde sat Taipei down in order on two ground balls and a pop out in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, Hayward slapped a single up the middle and Franklin hit a ground ball to shortstop that was dropped while the fielder was racing to the bag for the force out, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Yee sacrificed the runners over to second and third and Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON) was issued an intentional walk to load the bases. A ground ball to second base led to a force out at home for the second out, but Thomas stepped up and delivered the clutch game-winning single with a line drive to centerfield to give Canada the 3-2 win.

Box Score: Canada 3 vs. Chinese Taipei 2

Caira was fantastic in the pitcher’s circle, allowing only three hits and struck out five batters in five innings of work. Plourde only made one mistake by giving up two runs on one hit and struck out one over two innings, notching the win. At the plate, Yee hit a double and a single and drove in two runs, while Franklin also had a double and a single. Hayward, Rafter and Thomas each added singles.

Other scores at the General Tire World Cup of Softball IX on Tuesday were:

- Japan 8 vs. Venezuela 1 (5 innings)
- Mexico 7 vs. Philippines 0 (5 innings)

Venezuela (1-2) is scheduled to play the United States (0-0) later tonight.

Team Canada (2-0) will be back in action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against the Philippines (1-1) at 11:00am PDT and Venezuela (1-2) at 2:00pm PDT. For live scoring and webstreams, visit the event’s website.
