Canada Loses to Argentina at ISF Junior Men’s
World Softball Championship

(Whitehorse, YT) The Canadian Junior Men’s National Team suffered its first loss of the ISF X Junior Men’s World Softball Championship, dropping a 7-0 decision in five innings to the defending champions from Argentina. The game was much tighter than the score indicated, as Argentina held a 1-0 lead going into the fifth inning before scoring six runs to put the run rule in effect. Argentinean pitcher Roman Godoy held Canada to only four hits and struck out nine to earn the win.

Argentina didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard, as Teo Migliavacca worked a leadoff walk, moved up to second on a groundout and later scored on a single by Godoy. In the bottom of the inning, Canada’s Samuel Bedard-Desmarais (Nicolet, QC) earned a one-out walk and advanced to second on a single by Curtis Piecowye (Saskatoon, SK), but Godoy notched a big strikeout to end the threat. The following inning, Argentina got another leadoff walk but the runner was quickly erased on a nice double play. Franco Ortellado hit a ground rule double, but the next batter flew out to right field. Canada went down in order in the bottom of the frame as the score remained 1-0.

In the top of the third, Argentina got a leadoff single by Alan Peker, but a pair of fly outs and a strike out by Canadian starting pitcher Matt Wardrop (Owen Sound, ON) left Peker stranded. Team Canada has its best chance to score in the bottom of the third inning as they loaded the bases with no outs on a single by Francois-Charles Rene (St-Leonard-d’Aston, QC), a double off the chalk of the left field line by Tyler Pauli (Mitchell, ON) and an infield single on a bunt by Bedard-Desmarais. However, the next batter hit a hard ground ball to the pitcher that Godoy scooped up and threw to the plate and then over to first for a quick double play. The next batter struck out as Argentina escaped the inning without allowing a run.

Facundo Carril led off the top of the fourth with a bunt single, but was caught stealing by Taylor Schubada (Irma, AB) who picked him off at second from his knees. Matias Zapata then double to left-center field fence, but Wardrop struck out the next batter to end the inning. Godoy struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth inning as Canada could not get anything going.

In the fifth, Argentina loaded the bases with one out on an error and two walks before Godoy singled and the next batter was hit by a pitch to bring two runs in to score. After a pitching change, Gonzalo Masmu hit an opposite field grand slam that just cleared the right field fence to increase Argentina’s lead to 7-0. Canada got a runner on base with a hit by pitch in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to score as Argentina won the game on the run rule.

Box Score: Argentina 7 vs. Canada 0

Wardrop took the loss for Canada, allowing six runs on six hits and five walks as he had trouble finding the zone, and struck out three batters. Tyler Randerson (New Hamburg, ON) came on in relief and allowed one run on one hit with one strikeout. At the plate, Pauli, Bedard-Desmarais, Rene and Piecowye all had a single for Canada.
