Canada Wins Thrilling Game against United States at
ISF Junior Men’s World Softball Championship

(Whitehorse, YT) The Canadian Junior Men’s National Team came out on top with a thrilling 9-8 win over the United States on the third day of competition at the ISF X Junior Men’s World Championship. After building a 7-1 lead heading into the seventh, Canada saw the United States mount a big comeback to take an 8-7 lead before Tyson Zehr (Tavistock, ON) notched a walk off hit with the bases loaded to give Canada the win in the bottom of the seventh.

Tyler Randerson (New Hamburg, ON) got the ball in the pitcher’s circle for Canada, and sat the United States down quickly in the top of the first on a pair of groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom of the inning, Canada got hits by Tyler Pauli (Mitchell, ON) and Samuel Bedard-Desmarais (Nicolet, QC) to put runners on the corners, and a double steal scored Pauli from third to open the scoring for Canada. Randerson walked the leadoff hitter in the top of the second but that runner was quickly erased on a double play, followed by a strikeout to keep USA off the board. Canada also went down in order on a pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the bottom of the frame.

In the top of the third, Randerson made quick work of the Americans once again with a strikeout, a ground out and a pop out, and Canada went on to add to its lead. Nick Penner (New Hamburg, ON) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on an error, and Bedard-Desmarais advanced to second. Curtis Piecowye (Saskatoon, SK) then delivered a two-run double just inside the left field line to increase Canada’s lead to 3-0.

Randerson issued a one-out walk in the fourth, but the next batter grounded out and Taylor Schubada (Irma, AB) picked a runner off at third when he blocked a ball in the dirt and the runner heading to third over-slid the bag to get out of the inning. Randerson led off the bottom of the frame with a single, but after fly out for the first out, the next batter hit a line drive to second and the runner on first was doubled off. Randerson kept up his great work in the pitcher’s circle by sitting the Americans down in order in the fifth on a groundout and two strikeouts. In the bottom of the inning, Penner was hit by a pitch followed by a single by Pauli to put runners on the corners. Bedard-Desmarais then hit a ground ball to the hole at second base that the second baseman made a great diving play to catch, but his throw to first was off target to allow both Penner and Pauli to score and give Canada a 5-0 lead.

The United States broke up Randerson’s no-hitter with a leadoff solo homerun by Justin Perez in the top of the sixth, but Canada came right back to score two runs in the bottom of the frame. Zehr walked with one out before Francois-Charles Rene (St-Leonard-d’Aston, QC) launched a two-run homerun over the right field fence to give Canada a commanding 7-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.

After a quick first out, Team USA got a single and a double down the first base line to put runners on second and third. The next batter hit a ground ball to second that was thrown away at first base to allow one run to score. The following hitter singled in another run, and after a walk loaded the bases, another walk scored a run, reducing the lead to 7-4. The following batter hit a ground ball to Randerson’s right but the throw to the plate was off line to allow one run to score, and a toss by the catcher back to Randerson at the plate was just late as the Americans cut the lead to 7-6. Eric Healey (Chapels Cove, NL) came on in relief of Randerson, and after getting a big strikeout for the second out, the next batter hit a slow roller that was bobbled by Healey to allow the tying run to cross the plate. A walk loaded the bases, and the next batter hit a slow ground ball towards first that the first baseman had no play on, allowing yet another run to score as the United States took an 8-7 lead.

After finally getting out of the top of the seventh, Canada did not lie down as Schubada smacked a ground-rule double over the centerfielder’s head and immediately scored on a single by Piecowye to tie the game. Johnathan Baker (Kitchener, ON) singled to put runners on the corners, and pinch-hitter Josh Elliot (Prince Albert, SK) was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs as the United States put the force at every base into effect. However, Zehr hit a deep fly ball over the left fielder’s head for the huge walk off game-winning hit as Canada earned the thrilling 9-8 win.

Box Score: Canada 9 vs. United States 8

After having a one-hitter through six innings, Randerson ended up allowing eight runs – only three earned – on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts in six innings and a third. Healey earned the win by throwing two third of an inning, with one walk and one strikeout. Piecowye led the red and white at the plate with a double, a single and three runs batted in, while Pauli also had a pair of hits. Rene added a two-run homerun, with Schubada connecting for a double and single hits going to Bedard-Desmarais, Baker, Randerson, Penner and Zehr, as Canada outhit the United States 11-4.
