Canada Splits Doubleheader at ISF Junior Men’s
World Softball Championship

(Whitehorse, YT) The Canadian Junior Men’s National Team split a pair of games at the ISF X Junior Men’s World Championship, falling 5-3 to Mexico before thumping Denmark 13-0. Canada’s bats were silenced for most of the game against Mexico, but found themselves in the nightcap against Denmark. In the first game against Mexico, the Mexican starting pitcher limited Canada to only one hit by Justin Boyer (St. Louis, SK) over the first six innings as his team built a 5-0 lead. Canada was able to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little, too late. In the second game, Canada produced 14 hits and put up seven runs in the top of the third inning to put the game out of reach.

Mexico did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard in the first game, as the third batter of the first inning Heraldo Borquez hit a two-out solo homerun over the centerfield fence to give Mexico an early 1-0 lead. Canada started a two-out rally of its own in the bottom of the inning with a pair of walks by Taylor Schubada (Irma, AB) and Curtis Piecowye (Saskatoon, SK), but the next batter grounded out to second. Both teams went down in order in the second and third innings before Mexico added to its lead with another two-out solo homerun by Daniel Durazo over the right field fence to increase the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth. Matt Pilon (Duck Lake, SK) was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the frame, but a groundout left him stranded ion first.

In the bottom of the fifth, Boyer got Canada’s first hit of the game, lacing a leadoff single up the middle. After a fly out to left, Boyer was sacrificed over to second by Tyson Zehr (Tavistock, ON) but a fly out to right field ended the inning. In the top of the sixth, Mexico was able to string some hits together to take control of the game. The first two batters singled, and after a popped out bunt attempt, back-to-back singles pushed two more runs in to score. They went on to add another run on a fielder’s choice to increase its lead to 5-0.

Looking to come back in the bottom of the seventh, Pilon led off with a single, moved up to second on a passed ball and to third on a ground ball to first base. Boyer then hit a hard line drive that went through the left fielder’s glove allowing Pilon to score and Boyer to race around the bases to third. After a fly out for the second out, Boyer scored on a wild pitch and Zehr dropped a single into centerfield. Tyler Pauli (Mitchell, ON) followed that up with a triple over the center fielder’s head to score Zehr, but that was as close as Canada would get as Mexico earned the 5-3 win.

Box Score: Mexico 5 vs. Canada 3

Matt Wardrop (Owen Sound, ON) started the game in the pitcher’s circle for Canada, and allowed five runs on six hits and struck out five in five and a third innings. Tyler Randerson (New Hamburg, ON) pitched an inning and two thirds of hitless relief, striking out three batters. Canada managed four hits in the ball game, including Pauli’s triple and singles by Pilon, Boyer and Zehr.

In the second game against Denmark, Canada got a pair of walks before Francois-Charles Rene (St-Leonard-d’Aston, QC) hit a three-run homerun over the right field fence with two outs. After Denmark went down in order in the bottom of the first, Canada got a single by Pauli and a walk before Josh Elliot (Prince Albert, SK) hit a double to score Pauli, increasing Canada’s lead to 4-0. Denmark was able to get runners on second and third on a single, a walk and a passed ball, but Canadian pitcher Marc-Andre Villeneuve (St-Leonard-d’Aston, QC) struck out the last batter to get out of the inning.

The red and white got back-to-back singles by Justin Ganie (Irma, AB) and Boyer to start the top of the third, and after a strikeout, the next batter reached on a fielder’s choice with an error on the throw to second. Pauli hit a two-run single, followed by another two-run single by Nick Penner (New Hamburg, ON) who raced all the way to home when the centerfielder missed the ball, as Canada took a 9-0 lead. Taylor Schubada (Irma, AB) followed that up with a double, and Elliot walked before Rene drove in Schubada with a single to right field. Elliot went on to score on a single by Boyer as Canada went up 11-0.

In the fourth, Zach MacKay (Irma, AB) led off with a homerun over the centerfield fence, and after Canada loaded the bases on singles by Penner and Schubada and a walk to Elliot, Rene stepped up and hit another run-scoring single to round out the scoring. Denmark put two runners on base in the bottom of the frame on a pair of singles, but was unable to score.

Box score: Canada 13 vs. Denmark 0

Villeneuve earned the four inning win for Canada, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out three. Rene led Canada at the plate with a homerun, two singles, and four runs batted in, while Pauli, Penner, Schubada and Boyer all collected a pair of hits. Single hits went to Elliot, Ganie and MacKay.
