Canada Finishes ISF Junior Men’s World Softball Championship Preliminary Round with Win over Singapore

(Whitehorse, YT) The Canadian Junior Men’s National Team wrapped up its preliminary round schedule at the ISF X Junior Men’s World Championship with an 8-5 win over Singapore. Francois-Charles Rene (St-Leonard-d’Aston, QC) had four hits including two triples, while Tyler Pauli (Mitchell, ON) hit a two-run homerun for Canada. Singapore took a 2-0 lead before Canada scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning, and Canada added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to hold of Singapore. Canada finished the preliminary round with a 4-5 record, good for seventh place.

In the top of the first, Canadian pitcher Eric Healey (Chapels Cove, NL) retired Singapore in order on two groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom of the frame, Pauli was hit by a pitch to start the inning but Canada was unable to advance him any further. Singapore went down in order again in the second, while Rene led off the bottom of the inning with a triple but two fly outs and a strikeout kept him from scoring.

Singapore was able to push two runs across without getting a hit in the top of the third. The first batter reached on a dropped third strike followed by an error to put runners on the corners. The runner on first stole second, and after a strikeout, the following batter hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field, with the other runner moving up to third on later scoring on a wild pitch. Canada’s bats woke up in the bottom of the third, as they scored five runs on five hits to take a 5-2 lead. Zach MacKay (Irma, AB) led off with a double and quickly scored on a two-run shot by Pauli. Nick Penner (New Hamburg, ON) walked, and after he advanced to second on a wild pitch, he scored on a single by Taylor Schubada (Irma, AB). Josh Elliot (Prince Albert, SK) singled to put runners on the corners, and another triple by Rene pushed both runners in to score.

In the fourth inning, Singapore got its leadoff hitter on base on an error, but they could not move him around to score, and Canada went down in order. Singapore got another runner on base in the fifth on a one-out walk, but was once again not able to move the runner ahead. In the bottom of the fifth, Elliot hit a leadoff double followed by a single by Rene before Justin Ganie (Irma, AB) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Elliot.

Singapore got into the hit column with a one-out single, with the runner advancing to second on a passed ball and to third on a groundout before scoring on another passed ball. In the bottom of the frame, Canada quickly loaded the bases on a pair of walks to MacKay and Pauli and a single Penner. Schubada drove in MacKay with a sacrifice fly, and Rene hit another single to score Pauli and increase Canada’s lead to 8-3. In the top of the seventh, Singapore got a one-out walk and a single to put runners on the corners, followed by a run-scoring single by Tan Ivan. The following batter reached on an error with another run crossing the plate on the play as Singapore cut the lead to 8-5. However, a pair of strikeouts finished the game for Canada.
