USA Softball Women’s National Team gets pair of wins in Waldorf, Md. exhibition play

 

Waldrof, Md. -  In their final exhibition doubleheader of the summer the 2014 USA Softball Women’s National Team swept the Maryland All Stars at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldrof, Md. on Tuesday night the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America/USA Softball announced today. In game one, two USA pitchers teamed up for a no-hitter in a 6-0 win. The Maryland All Stars managed their first hit of the evening in game two but couldn’t get much else going as the USA Women used nine hits to score 10 runs and get the win 10-0.

Jolene Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Sara Nevins (Pinellas Park, Fla.) tallied 12 strikeouts and walked one in completing the no-hitter in game one of the exhibition doubleheader. Henderson, who started the game, earned the win going three complete innings and striking out five while facing the minimum, nine batters.

 

Team USA used a steady dose of scoring to get the shutout. The first runs of the contest came in the bottom of the second when the American National Team scored two on an error and an RBI single from Haylie McCleney (Morris, Ala.).

 

The USA Women scored one run in the third and another in the fourth to push their lead to 4-0 entering the fifth inning. In their next at-bat, Team USA added two more runs to the lead when McCleney first doubled to score Hallie Wilson (Santa Ana, Calif.) and then Raven Chavanne (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) followed it with a single scoring Destinee Martinez (Corona, Calif.).

 

The Maryland All Stars managed thier first base runner of the evening in the top of the sixth but Nevins struck out three to end the game securing the 6-0 win for Team USA.

 

McCleney boosted her batting average thanks to a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate as she paced Team USA offensively.

Megan Elliot took the loss for the Maryland All Stars. She lasted three innings, walked three, struck out two and allowed three runs.

A seven-run explosion in the fifth inning spurred the USA Women’s National Team to a 10-0 win in five innings over the Maryland All Stars in game two of the doubleheader. The scoring run began when Wilson singled to left field scoring Sam Fischer (Simi Valley, Calif.) from third. Two hits and two errors later Team USA scored its 10th run of the contest when McCleney crossed home on a passed ball to end the game.

Jessica Moore (Sutter, Calif.) earned the win in the circle as the Oregon alum pitched three innings with five strikeouts, surrendering just one hit. Jaclyn Traina (Naples, Fla.) entered the circle in the fourth and struck out three without allowing a hit over two innings of play.

McCleney was again the leading hitter going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI including a run-scoring triple in the fourth inning.

Rachel Johnson was credited with the loss for the Maryland All Stars as she lead a pitching staff that allowed 10 runs on nine hits.

 

The USA Softball Women’s National Team will now turn their focus internationally as they travel to Italy for Italian Softball Week to prepare for the International Softball Federation (ISF) World Championship in Haarlem, Netherlands August 12-24.
