After finishing third in the regular season standings, the Countrymen faced the Minesing Mallards in the first round of the Playoffs.  The Countrymen bounced the Mallards in an exciting five game series to reach the finals.  On the other side of the playoff bracket, the number one seed Wyevale Tribe outlasted the fourth seeded Unthoff Nationals in another full 5 game series.

 

Vasey would open the SRFL finals with 2 wins, only to drop the next two decisions to the Tribe, setting up a crucial Game 5 in Wyevale.

 

The Countrymen jumped out to an early lead in Game 5 and captured a 13-3 victory at Wyevale Park.

Seven runs in the first three innings allowed Vasey Countrymen to put the game away early. An RBI single by Brad Robinson and a two-run double by Steffan Walma in the first inning and a two-run triple by Robinson, an RBI triple by Walma, and an RBI single by Jamie Robinson during the second inning supplied the early offense for Vasey Countrymen.

 

Walma racked up three RBIs on two hits for Vasey Countrymen. While Brad Robinson supplied three RBIs on three hits and Jamie Robinson provided two hits and three RBI’s.

 

Dave Drinkill and Mark Giffen supplied the all the offence for the Tribesmen as each player racked up two hits, with Giffen driving home all three runs.

 

In the pitchers circle, it was also Brad Robinson who recorded the win for Vasey Countrymen. He allowed three runs over five innings, struck out six, walked five batters.  Mark Lambie ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision. He allowed seven runs in 1 2/3 innings, walked three and struck out two.

 

The Vasey Countrymen would like to thank Wyevale and their fans for an entertaining series with excellent sportsmanship.

 

On a side note….Vasey veteran Andy Robinson, who had taken a hiatus from fastball for several years, returned to action to claim his first league championship..  Andy started playing in the SRFL in 1987.  Congrats Andy!
